4 Year Degree Centre College invites applications for the position of Head Cheer Coach. This is an exempt (salary) position.

The Head Cheer Coach provides leadership in all coaching, recruiting, and administrative duties for a nationally competitive cheer program. The individual reports to the Deputy Director of Athletics. Secondary duty will be determined.

The Head Cheer Coach is a visible position that carries significant influence and thus requires strong character and work ethic.

Essential Job Functions: Organize, prepare, and conduct practices, trainings, and competitions; Successfully recruit student-athletes in accordance with all Centre College, Southern Athletic Association, and NCAA rules and regulations, and mindful of the College’s core values of diversity and inclusion; While leading, monitoring, and coordinating training and practice sessions, ensuring all appropriate safety guidelines are followed; Responsible for program budget to include travel, equipment, and recruiting expenses; Directing all aspects of the team; Expectation of being present, on campus, for your student-athletes throughout the academic year; Creating and maintaining a critical relationship with the Office of Admissions; Lead the holistic development of cheer student-athletes; Represent the program and the College to students, parents, community, alumni, and the general public; Manage the daily operations and administration facets of the cheer program; Establish team standards, expectations, values, and culture that align with the athletic department and the College; Attend continuing education to stay up to date on safety, skills, and technique; Build, and ultimately, maintain a roster of recruited student-athletes; Work with strength and conditioning staff to create training programs in order to maintain appropriate preparedness to meet the demands of the sport; Work with athletic training staff to ensure emergency procedures are followed and posted, and all appropriate protocol is followed; Ensure team members receive proper training before attempting gymnastics or partnered stunts; Work in conjunction with members of the athletic administration and support staff in regard to staffing needs, strategic budgeting, facility needs and enhancements, fundraising, alumni development, and program promotion; Make appropriate recommendations to athletic administration in regard to maintenance concerns and enhancement needs for facilities; Initiate new endeavors that will raise the level of awareness of Centre Athletics within our campus, and community; Initiate and coordinate an increased level of community outreach endeavors; Serve as advisor for the dance team; Actively participate in department-wide initiatives; Demonstrate an appreciation for and sensitivity to a diverse academic community, fostering an inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff from a variety of social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial, and ethnic backgrounds. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics;

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree with previous cheer experience as a coach or participant is required.  CPR, AED, and First-Aid certifications will be required prior to first practice date.  Relevant certifications for cheer. High integrity and ethical standards are required, along with enthusiasm for the mission of Centre College and Centre Athletics.  

 Knowledge and Skills

Demonstrated knowledge and coaching skills of the sport of cheer; A commitment to the Division III philosophy; Knowledge of NCAA, UCA/NCA and SAA rules; and a demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, and mentor student-athletes are essential.  Additional qualifications include communication skills that allow for the ability to teach, motivate, and counsel student-athletes effectively as well as being self-motivated, positive, energetic, eager to teach, and a willingness to travel. Ability to foster a team environment as well as the ability and desire to work successfully within a team-oriented athletic department is essential.  Fully embrace and practice the department’s priorities of Recruit, Educate/Train, Compete, and Inspire.   Application Instructions
