Group Manager- SE&I Engineer

The Consolidated Operations, Management, Engineering and Test (COMET) contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks support the International Space Station (ISS), Exploration Ground Systems (EGS), Space Launch System (SLS), Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services Programs.

 

As a member of the System Engineering & Integration (SE&I) Group within the Engineering Directorate, you would work directly with engineers responsible for the design, analysis, requirements management, development, and sustaining of new and existing Ground Support Equipment (GSE) subsystems required to support Artemis and ISS missions.

Responsibilities\:

Plan, lead, organize, and control allocated resources for the SE&I Group, which is responsible for development, management, and satisfaction of technical requirements of GSE subsystems (e.g. mechanical, structural, fluids, electrical) at KSC. Establish personnel requirements, assignments, and priorities across a multidisciplinary team of engineers. Evaluate results, employee performance, and organizational success while continuously improving upon past precedence.  Provide employee counseling and development opportunities while obeying all applicable EEO/AA programs. Make personnel-related recommendations to Senior Management and Human Resources. Offer expert technical feedback, as necessary, to employees, customers, and the COMET leadership team. Prepare resource estimates and comply with customer budgetary limitations. Manage internal Group schedules and deliverables within strict project time constraints. Continuously develop more proficient Group policies and procedures to streamline quality workflow and throughput. Implement efficient and effective quality, safety, and housekeeping standards. Cultivate a motivating and productive work environment that encourages high employee performance. Perform other duties as assigned. *

BS in related management area, at least 10 years related experience including at least three years of successfully managing people.

 

Demonstrated leadership skills as evidenced by prior managerial, supervisory, and/or technical leadership experience. Excellent technical writing, communication, presentation, and customer interface skills. Must be well organized, detail oriented, and capable of effectively prioritizing several multidisciplinary projects. Excellent working knowledge of applicable System Engineering industry standards and best practices through all phases of system design, technical management, and product certification. Thorough understanding of KSC/NASA SE&I standards, practices, and procedures is highly desired. Working knowledge of KSC ground systems, such as the Mobile Launcher, Pad Structures, Crawler Transporter, Arms & Umbilicals, etc., is highly desired. Demonstrated capability to manage resources effectively within schedule and budgetary constraints. Ability to lead and provide direction to employees regarding established safety, quality, and performance protocols. Proven ability of fostering a motivated and productive staff with a passion for human space flight. Expert computer skills using Microsoft Office products. Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, if necessary.

Physical Requirements\: 

 

- May be required to climb stairs in order to access equipment for walkdowns and troubleshooting.
- Will be required to wear hearing protection, eye protection, and other associated personal protective equipment.
- Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing.
- Physical requirements are\: sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures.
- Position is located on a hazardous testing facility; must be able to quickly evacuate buildings in the event of an emergency.

 

Work Environment\: 

 

- Will be required to work inside and outside throughout the Space Center.
- Position may require daily individual to travel to different areas on site.
- Walking on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt/sand is required to access various locations on the facility.
- Climbing ladders and platforms may be necessary.  The use of fall arrest systems may be required.
- All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and Company safety standards. 

 

Equipment and Machines\:  

 

- Computers and printers used for producing design documents, reports, and schedules.
- Variety of equipment used in testing and troubleshooting.

 

Attendance\: 

 

- Hybrid work schedule possibilities, with requirement to be on-center a minimum of three days per week.
- Position may require occasional overtime, including weekend work, depending on task.
- Must be dependable and punctual.
- Shift work may be required.

 

Other Essential Functions\: 

 

- Must be able to accurately communicate ideas in writing and verbal correspondence.
- Must be able to travel to support position requirements. This may include travel to and from the customer location, which may involve airline travel. In some cases, accommodations can be made for POV, if necessary.
- Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
- Must comply with all “drug free workplace” requirements as mandated by directives issued by the appropriate federal contracting officer and the company, which requires drug testing for use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions.
- Government security clearance may be required in the future.
