Job Description

 

The Graphics department at The New York Times is looking for a leader in software engineering to conceive and drive the execution of publishing and storytelling tools that power our interactive and visual journalism across platforms. You will also help conceptualize and build new visual formats for news coverage and collaborate with other journalists from around the newsroom to create original visual journalism. 

You have an ability to create visually-compelling interactive experiences, and have experience creating tooling and systems to build web-based features. You will maintain and contribute to a suite of custom software used by hundreds of newsroom staffers to create visual and interactive journalism.

The Graphics department is a group of journalists and visual thinkers with creative backgrounds ranging from architecture to cartography to computer science. We are curious about all kinds of things and want to find individuals who bring their own curiosity to bear in creative approaches to storytelling.

You will report to the Assistant Editor, Graphics, Publishing Tools and Platform Innovation.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

Conceive and drive the execution of software tooling that allows others to produce and publish interactive journalism

Facilitate and guide contributions from other developers to core software

Sketch and quickly generate prototypes of interactive applications, graphics and other types of multimedia story forms

Collaborate on news deadlines with a multidisciplinary team to create journalism

Uphold the standards of accuracy, fairness and clarity expected of all Times journalists

Basic Qualifications:

5+ years of relevant experience

Expertise in development of interactive graphics or Web sites, including HTML, CSS and JavaScript

Expertise in building software and tooling for the publication of websites and interactive applications

Skill in interface design and information graphic design

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with Svelte and other modern web technologies.

Experience managing applications in cloud computing environments.

Curiosity and interest in the news, and in finding innovative approaches to telling stories.

Experience working collaboratively with members of a mixed-media team.

Experience adapting to change in a daily, unpredictable news production environment.

Experience making quick decisions under a deadline-driven and a high-pressure newsroom environment.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $130,000.00 and $155,000.00.
