Rapiscan Systems is an industry leader in detection technology, providing cargo and vehicle inspection systems and services for ports, borders, military, high-threat facilities, and checkpoints to help customers combat terrorism, drug smuggling, illegal immigration, and trade fraud. We offer a broad array of scanning system configurations that leverage low-, medium-, and high-energy X-ray technology—or multiple X-ray technologies—to address each customer’s unique security application requirements. Our commitment to excellence in imaging performance, innovative design, and uncompromising quality ensures our solutions consistently deliver best-in-class imaging, high reliability, and operator satisfaction, to help customers find threats and contraband with ease and confidence.

Overview of Role

Work as part of an expanding Science and Technology team to drive forward the Research and Development Road map for the Business. Working specifically on image performance validation, test phantom hardware design and image reconstruction techniques for a variety of different High-Energy X-ray sources and detector assemblies used in the Non-Intrusive Cargo and Vehicle Inspection industry. Working alongside physicists, software, and electronics engineers to experimentally evaluate the impact of innovative designs and concepts brought to market in a quick-turn around and fast-paced environment, whilst supporting legacy programs and existing schemes of work.

Responsibilities

Report to the Science and Technology Manager, with day-to-day support and guidance Senior team members within the Science group.

Support the data capture, analysis and system performance optimisation for a number of products at the point of Commissioning and customer acceptance testing.

Maintain up to date knowledge of industry performance standards for x-ray security screening and oversee a suite a test fixtures and phantoms to support the necessary image capture.

Own the creation, maintenance and dissemination of image capture protocols and techniques for validating system-level performance capabilities.

Understand, monitor and disseminate in a clear and concise manner the relevant standards for X-ray performance and dose exposure in Cargo and Vehicle imaging.

Develop and maintain analytical models: excel; Matlab; Geant4, to predict detector response to X-ray illumination and replicate X-ray spectral compositions.

Work closely with the software team to develop and deliver image enhancement tools and filters into the inspection suite.

Support programs and projects to deliver fully compliant X-ray imaging systems at customer acceptance tests, both on site and at customer facilities world-wide.

Take responsibility for the design of X-ray based imaging systems for inspection of cargo and vehicles.

Undertake system-level design and underlying physics analysis including:-

Top down design of new projects/data capture programs/imaging requirements in support of the tender processes.Bottom up design of new technologies from and imaging basis.Provision of image processing, data analysis and experimental work as required.Build interactions with other global departments to encourage pull-through of new R&D.Support wider S&T efforts at other global sites, universities, and external collaborations. Qualifications

Required

Graduate/Postgraduate experience in radiation physics with experimental background.Experience using excel and Matlab for data analysis. The ability to work with others in a multi-disciplinary, fast-paced product development environment.Willingness to support offsite (world wide) programs of work often at short notice and out of normal working hours in the UK.

Desirable

Experience using C# for desktop application development.Experience using oscilloscopes to examine real-time pulse shape data from radiation detector units.

OSI Systems, Inc. has three operating divisions: (a) Security, providing security and inspection systems, turnkey security screening solutions and related services; (b) Healthcare, providing patient monitoring, diagnostic cardiology and anesthesia systems; and (c) Optoelectronics and Manufacturing, providing specialized electronic components and electronic manufacturing services for original equipment manufacturers with applications in the defense, aerospace, medical and industrial markets, among others.
