Graduate Nurse Residency Program - Emergency Department\n

Hands-on training of clinical skills is front-loaded in the program to increase confidence at the bedside. Later classes include important transition topics like cultivating a health work culture, building resilience, addressing moral distress, educating patients and families, and growing your career at Cayuga Health.\n

Nurse residency programs start on predetermined dates, typically in August for May graduates and February for December graduates. Nurses start the nurse residency program after being hired for specific nursing units. To be considered for the program, you will need to apply to the designated residency program you are interested in. If you would like to be considered for numerous departments, you will have an opportunity to express your units of interest in the program application.\n

Roles and Responsibilities:\n\nAssesses patients and families, whose needs range from uncomplicated to highly complex and quickly recognizes normal parameters, deviations and abnormalities in physical, emotional, developmental and behavioral status based on past clinical experience. Use a person-centered care approach in the development of care plans and in prioritizing nursing care to meet patient and family needs.\nPlans for care of patients, demonstrating the ability to effectively prioritize both expected and unanticipated needs. Involves patients and families in establishing care goals.\nDemonstrates competence in the implementation of the technical skills required for the care of patients and families. Demonstrates initiative in remaining current on CMC policies, procedures and standards. Acts as a resource to peers.\nInterventions for the attainment of care goals reflect resourceful involvement of CMC health team members. Facilitates the linking of patients and families with other disciplines and services as needed.\nEvaluates effectiveness of care giving, and shows on going follow through in care delivery. Evaluation of care is reflective of the attainment of care goals. Demonstrates proficiency and compliance with established practices in clinical documentation.\nDemonstrates critical thinking skills by making appropriate clinical decisions, prioritizing both planned and unplanned events, and proactively addressing potential and actual problems.\n\n

Required Skills and Experience:\n\nLicense:Active New York Nursing license, out of state nurses are still eligible to apply\nMinimum education:Associates Degree in Nursing\nCertifications:BLS, ACLS, PALS (new hires have the opportunity to obtain these certifications during introductory period)\n\n

Physical Requirements:\n\nRepetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., Use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs), including boxes, equipment, IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves and to file documents in lower file drawers); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time may be necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.\n\n
