About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.
About Indiana Department of Environmental Management:
Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.
Role Overview:
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s Southeast Regional Office in Brownstown is seeking a motivated and energetic intern to join our agency and assist in public education and outreach projects in the summer 2025. The intern will support a variety of projects including, but not limited to, assisting with public outreach events and booths, conducting educational presentations, assisting with creating new print, electronic and social media materials, developing marketing plans and goals, and developing targeted outreach materials, and more. This position will be hands on and will have the opportunity to work directly with the public and environmental professionals. The ideal candidate should have proficiency in using digital media, developing outreach materials, marketing, and using Word, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.
Salary Statement:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
Location:
This position is located in IDEM Southeast Regional Offices, Brownstown, Indiana.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
+ Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
+ Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
+ Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
+ Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
+ Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
+ Providing assistance with and attending regional-focused outreach opportunities and programs via onsite booths, fairs, event participation and interactive public education opportunities in Southeastern Indiana.
+ Assisting with drafting and updating educational presentations targeted for specific customer groups or types for Open Burning, Open Dumping, Clean Fill, and the Indiana Clean Community Program.
+ Assisting in creating new print, electronic, social media, and video materials for the Open Burning and Open Dumping Campaigns, Indiana Clean Communities, and other educational programs.
+ Researching and writing various articles and informational pieces for newsletters, brochures, and other publications.
+ Assisting with developing targeted digital outreach materials for the Clean Community Program.
+ Working with program staff and media experts to develop social media tools and materials for use at key outreach periods (Spring and Fall).
+ Shadowing environmental experts in various disciplines to learn about field work and environmental rules application.

What You'll Need for Success:
+ Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
+ Academic work in related field
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills
+ Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
+ Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
+ Ability to conduct well-informed research
+ Ability to solve complex, critical problems
+ Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
+ Should be able to read maps and efficiently find remote sampling locations
+ Organizational skills, database experience, and general familiarity with computer systems are desired
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
