What You'll Do

The Data Layer Team is where we build essential data platforms, products, and capabilities to empower our clients and colleagues with high-quality, actionable insights. Our Data Layer Team focuses on creating scalable data solutions and advancing our data infrastructure to drive informed decision-making across the company. 

 

We’re looking for a Technical Area Lead (TAL) for the Data Layer to set and implement the strategic vision for our data platform ecosystem, including data engineering and governance. This role requires translating business needs into robust data solutions and owning the data strategy, architecture, and engineering excellence within BCG. This includes accountability for reliable data infrastructure, data governance, and driving data enablement with a commitment to Security, Compliance, Operational Excellence, and Customer Satisfaction. 

 

As a Data Layer TAL, you will drive innovation, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and shape data product roadmaps, keeping the organization at the forefront of data engineering best practices and technology. Your work will enable and accelerate BCG's Gen AI/AI ambitions! 

 

 

Among your responsibilities, you will: 

 

Develop the Data & Cloud Strategy at Scale 

Define and execute a comprehensive Cloud based data roadmap, embracing modern data engineering patterns (serverless computing, containerization, event-driven architectures). 

Champion innovations in generative AI and advanced analytics, ensuring the organization stays ahead of emerging trends in areas like vector databases, graph data models, and LLM-based use cases. 

Lead the internal development of data-driven products and act as a strategic thought partner to enable and enhance BCG’s client-facing commercial offerings. 

Drive continuous improvement of data governance, security, and compliance, aligning with international regulations (GDPR, CCPA, etc.). 

 

Lead Comprehensive Data Platform Engineering 

Oversee the end-to-end engineering of data platforms, supporting data ingestion pipelines for batch, file-based, and API-based integrations. 

Build and optimize data storage solutions, including data lakes, data warehouses, vector databases, graph databases, and index stores. 

Enhance the data catalog to ensure discoverability, accessibility, and usability of enterprise data assets, enabling faster insights and data-driven decision-making. 

Define the strategy for managing unstructured data. 

Orchestrating multi-cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) for optimal data platform performance and cost-efficiency. 

Design and implement logic and compute layers with reusable ETL components, AI/ML pipelines for metadata preprocessing, chunking, and tokenization. 

Implement automation to provision data warehouses, data bases for product teams, case teams, data product teams. 

Implement comprehensive security controls, robust observability and monitoring frameworks to ensure data quality, minimize downtime, and optimize performance across the enterprise. 

Manage budget, implement charge-back models for platforms and services you provide to your customers. 

 

 

Enable Data Management & Sharing 

Drive key data management initiatives, including data quality assurance, metadata management, data cataloging, and global data product management. 

Develop scalable data-sharing frameworks using APIs, gateways, and marketplaces to enable seamless data consumption and distribution. 

Ensure compliance with data governance standards, enabling secure and efficient access to enterprise data assets. 

 

Operationalize AI & Advanced Analytics Pipelines 

Build and enhance multi-modal ingestion pipelines capable of integrating structured and unstructured data sources, including documents, forms, SaaS data, and APIs. 

Develop scalable systems to support graph processing, graph databases, vector databases, and embedding stores, enabling high-performance query resolution and intelligent search capabilities. 

Collaborate with teams to operationalize workflows for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), agentic interactions, and embedding-based analytics. 

 

Build & Scale High-Performing Teams 

Hire, mentor, and lead a team of 20+ professionals, including data engineers, DevOps specialists, cloud engineers, and data governance experts, comprising both contractors and full-time employees and foster culture of collaboration and innovation. 

Define clear responsibilities, performance metrics, and career paths to promote growth and drive accountability. 

Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product owners, QA, and DevOps, to ensure smooth delivery and alignment with organizational goals. 

 

Champion Operational Excellence & Compliance 

Establish and maintain DevSecOps best practices, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and automated testing for data services. 

Ensure adherence to data security and privacy standards, proactively identifying and mitigating risks. 

Oversee budget management for data platforms, balancing cost efficiency with the need for continuous innovation. 

 

 

Engage and Manage Stakeholders Across BCG 

Proactively engage with senior stakeholders, other TALs and Data Product teams across BCGX, Core, and the broader organization. 

Collaborate closely with BCG’s C-Suite to align data platform strategy with strategic business objectives and communicate progress effectively. 

Cultivate partnerships with external vendors, explore new technologies and innovation in Data space, negotiating contracts and ensuring alignment with platform standards for quality, security, and performance. 

 

 

YOU’RE GOOD AT:

 

Strong expertise in designing, deploying, and managing cloud-native data solutions (e.g., S3, Redshift, EMR, Lambda, Kinesis, DynamoDB). 

Large-Scale Data Engineering: Experience with high-volume data pipelines, including real-time streaming, event-driven microservices, and petabyte-scale data processing. 

Advanced Analytics & AI: Familiarity with machine learning pipelines, generative AI, embeddings, and vector databases, along with a track record of productionizing ML models. 

Graph Processing & RAG Workflows: Expertise in designing workflows and systems for graph databases, vector stores, chunking strategies, and embedding-based search. 

Data Management & Sharing: Deep knowledge of data quality, metadata management, data cataloging, and developing scalable data-sharing frameworks. 

Strategic Leadership: Ability to set a compelling data vision aligned with business objectives and inspire teams to execute against it. 

Collaboration & Influence: Skilled at engaging with stakeholders across the organization, from engineering peers to C-level executives, ensuring clear communication and alignment. 

Operational Rigor: Adept at implementing DevSecOps practices, robust quality controls, and automated monitoring to maintain enterprise-grade reliability. 



What You'll Bring

12+ years of experience in data engineering, software engineering, or cloud infrastructure roles, with 5+ years in a director or senior leadership capacity. 

Proven success architecting enterprise-scale platforms (data lakes, streaming pipelines, data warehouses), Snowflake, Databrick and delivering end-to-end data solutions. 

Deep knowledge of data governance, regulatory compliance, and security best practices in handling sensitive and global datasets. 

Hands-on experience integrating advanced AI/ML capabilities into operational systems, including embeddings, large-language-model pipelines, and real-time feature engineering. 

Comprehensive understanding of modern data orchestration and workflow technologies (e.g., Airflow, Kubeflow) and infrastructure automation (Terraform, CloudFormation).
