Genetic Counselor

Job Summary

To provide comprehensive genetic counseling services to individuals and families seeking information about genetic conditions and to provide risk assessment. The genetic counselor practices as a part of a genetic service team, communicating genetic, medical and technical information with the knowledege and insight into the psychosocial and cultural experiences important to each patient and family.

Essential Functions

Provides genetic counseling services, evaluates patient and family health educational needs, initiates appropriate genetic risk assessment and plan appropriate screening tests.Assess the needs of patients, significant others and family members. Obtains insurance pre-authorization, drafts letters of medical necessity and processes billing.Facilitate appropriate medical and psychosocial follow-up for high-risk patients and their families. Acts as a patient or family advocate. Documents care/teaching consistent with documentation guidelines and regulatory standards.Communicates and collaborates with other members of the health care team in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services. Attends and presents relevant conferences as it relates to clinical genetics and other healthcare.Networks locally and nationally to increase awareness of the Beaumont Clinical Genetics Program. Participates in regional and national professional organizations to promote genetics best practices.Participates in educational programs for other health care professionals, educators or lay public.Supports and participates in a collaborative team-oriented environment – cooperates and works together with all co-workers, plans and completes job duties, uses appropriate communications in sensitive and emotional situations and follows up as appropriate regarding reported complaints, problems and concerns.

Qualifications

Required Master's Degree Graduate of an accredited Master's Level Genetic Counseling Program.2 years of relevant experience Experience in Clinical Genetics. PreferredLIC-Genetic Counselor License - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required OrLIC-Genetic Counselor License - STATE_MI State of Michigan Temporary License according to MI Guidelines Upon Hire requiredCRT-Board Cert Genetic Counselor (BC-CGC) - ABCGN American Board of Genetic Counseling 2 Yrs required OrCRT-Board Cert Clinical Molecular Genetics (CMG) - ABMGG American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics 2 Yrs required
