**Job Summary and Description:**
This position will support EPRI’s Fusion Energy Strategic Program, which seeks to enable and accelerate commercialization of fusion as a firm, non-emitting, scalable energy source. This internship will support in maintaining EPRI’s and EPRI stakeholder’s awareness of the fusion energy industry landscape. The Student Employee will work with technical staff to develop and populate a technology scouting database documenting key features, attributes and capabilities of fusion energy system designs and other enabling technologies, along with profile information on the associated developers, vendors, and facilities. The Student Employee may also be expected to provide high-level written report outs and presentations on findings. This Student Employee may also assist on other R&D projects related to needs for fusion deployment and future fusion end-user engagement.
**Key Responsibilities:**
+ Support technical staff in developing a fusion energy technology scouting database capturing the state of the fusion industry.
+ Conduct technical searches in relevant literature and publications to understand key attributes of fusion technology options under development, including technology concept and confinement approach, fuel choice, anticipated power output, power conversion system type, and relevant information on fusion company profiles. This student may coordinate with EPRI subject matter expert to identify additional characteristics to capture.
+ Collect and synthesize information in multiple formats, including databases, written reports, and verbal presentations.
+ Support in other literature and information searches as relevant to other R&D projects related to fusion deployment and project execution, such as power plant siting and owner-operator requirements.
+ May also support in developing reports or presentations explaining the science of fusion to technical and non-technical audiences.
**Qualifications:**
+ Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in an engineering or science discipline
+ Excellent communication skills, including interpersonal communication with mentors, written communication, and presentations.
+ Excellent independent problem-solving skills as well as teamwork abilities.
+ Experience with Microsoft Office tools and databases.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
The ideal candidate would possess at least some of the following preferred qualifications:
+ Prior course study in nuclear engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering, or currently enrolled in a nuclear engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering curriculum.
+ Basic knowledge of the energy industry and power system infrastructure.
+ Experience communicating complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
+ Ability to work both collaboratively and independently with a positive attitude.
The hourly rate range for Student positions are:
+ Undergraduate: $16-29 per hour
+ Masters: $25-31 per hour
+ Ph.D: $27-34 per hour
These ranges are an estimate, and the actual hourly rate may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The hourly rate may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.
As an EPRI Student, you will not participate in EPRI’s Benefit Programs which includes health insurance, retirement benefits, vacation, sick leave (except as set required by law) and holiday pay. However, as a Student employee you are eligible for the benefits of Social Security, State Disability Insurance, and Workers’ Compensation Insurance.
For Student positions which require one to relocate to an EPRI office. Relocation assistance is not provided and the student will be responsible for covering all relocation costs/expenses.
EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
