Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) is one of North America’s premier processors, buyers, sellers and recyclers of scrap metals of all kinds and is a key supplier to the metals industry of North America. FPT is a wholly-owned business of Cleveland-Cliffs and has an immediate opportunity for a Furnace Operator on 1st shift at the Detroit, MI location. The Furnace Operator is part of the quality team responsible preparing, testing and analyzing various scrap metals. 

Summary of Responsibilities:

Ensure adherence to safety standards including use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), remove hazards as identified, and maintain cleanliness of the facilityPrepare scrap metals for melting by dryingWeigh specific amounts of material for furnace charge, and load into induction melting furnaceResponsible for operating an induction melting furnaceExtract test samples from molten metalVerify chemistry of material once melted using spectrometerSkim slag from surface molten metal, using scoopOperate and monitor furnace(s) per procedures and instructionsOperate for truck as neededPrepare plaster and relines furnaceTrack and maintain adequate inventory of foundry productsUphold compliance to environmental, safety, state, and local requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED and must be at least 18 years of age1-3 years foundry experienceExperience in scrap industry preferredMetallurgy training or coursework a plusExperience operating an induction furnace preferredAbility to interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manualsBasic math and reading skillsAbility to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Computer experience with Microsoft Office preferredGood written and oral communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to lift up to 50lbsMust be able to work in an environment where routinely exposed to dust, dirt, vibrations, extreme climate and changes in weatherPre-Employment background, physical, and hair drug screen required
