JOB SPECIFICS
The Fleet Technician performs highly-skilled analysis and interpretation of technical data and performs mechanical maintenance and repair work to the complex components and systems fleet vehicles and equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a High school diploma or equivalent) and three years of mechanical work experience. Must obtain a Class "A", Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Air Brake and tank vehicle endorsements within six months of employment. Must obtain a Minnesota Commercial Vehicle Inspector Certification and an Air Conditioning certification within twelve months of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Post-secondary training in auto mechanics, heavy equipment mechanic experience, small engine repair experience, agricultural equipment (e.g., tractors) repair experience, A.S.E. (Automotive Service Excellence) certification, and welder experience and certifications are highly desirable.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:
+ Prior experience in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing heavy equipment and diesel engines.
+ Prior experience with repair and maintenance experience of automobiles and light trucks.
+ Prior repair and maintenance experience with small engines, both 2- and 4-cycle.
+ Prior experience working as a mechanic in a fleet environment.
SELECTION TECHNIQUE: Your training and experience will be rated based on the required application material submitted and the top-scoring candidates will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration.
HOURS / DAYS: 7:00 am – 3:30 pm / Monday – Friday / 40 hours per week. May include day, evening, weekend & holiday hours. Work schedules (hours and days) are subject to change based on department needs.
ANTICIPATED HIRING RATE: $26.98 - $32.30 Hourly

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform scheduled fleet maintenance tasks:
• Perform scheduled maintenance, including: gasoline and diesel engines tune ups, spark plug installation, fuel injectors and valve lash and fuel flow; replacing belts, hoses, and filters, and replacing and balancing tires, etc.;
• Assess, diagnose, and repair malfunctions in complex equipment and systems using diagnostic equipment and specialized tools and equipment; systems include engine control. lighting control, electric over hydraulic controls for salter/plow and other equipment.
• Service fleet air-conditioning systems;
• Ensure proper removal, refilling and disposal of all hazardous gases or materials;
• Conduct repairs and major overhauls on engines, transmissions, drive-train and other fleet components;
• Complete Minnesota State Patrol Annual Commercial Vehicle Inspections to maintain truck and equipment certifications;
• Complete and document repairs identified in inspection process;
• Prepare new fleet for service, including: decal, 2-way radio, and custom equipment installations;
• Recommend new equipment to improve operations;
• Prepare County and impound vehicles for auction,
• Assist in impound lot management;
• Respond to emergency calls in the field;
• Make field repairs or tows vehicles; and equipment
• Perform maintenance welding and cutting repairs; designs, fabricates, and installs parts and equipment including custom needs and unscheduled repairs.
• Performs Hydraulic system diagnoses and repair of pumps, motors, cylinders, hoses, valves, and other components.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical in nature and majority of work performed within maintenance shop. Frequently lifts up to 60 pounds with occasional lifts over that amount with assistance. Senses used on a constant basis are vision, hearing and smelling. Work is very physical in nature requiring bending, turning/twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, and climbing, reaching, wrist turning, grasping, and finger manipulation throughout the day. Equipment t used/repaired may include, but is not limited to: automobiles, squad cars, snowmobiles, boats, tractors, trailers, trucks, mowers, air and hydraulic brake systems, cooling systems, drive lines, exhaust systems, and suspension and spring systems, carburetors, transmissions, differentials, electrical systems, computer controlled systems, hydraulic components, snow and ice equipment including plows, wings and sanders, tire machines, forklifts, iron worker, band saw, welding machines, cutting torches, hand and power tools, grinders, 2-way radios, telephone, testing equipment, battery chargers, tool boxes, and protective clothing. Frequently operates a County vehicle, sometimes in inclement weather. Exposures include but are not limited to: seasonal temperature extremes, sprays, grease, cleaning solvents, welding, gasoline and diesel fumes, elevated noise levels and vibration, and performing tasks in confined spaces.
