Powers Health is hiring a Financial Counselor!

Position located at St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago, In

Hours: M-F 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

Job Description:

Responsibilities include handling person-to-person collections with in-house patients while maintaining positive public relations. Monitors and evaluates in-house patients’ financial history to ensure sufficient information to establish viable payment plans following department policy and procedures.  Reviews financial information to determine eligibility for the Affordable Care Act, Welfare or Charity Programs. Files necessary forms needed to obtain proper payment from Welfare/Public Aid. Helps contact insurance companies for verification of patient coverage and enters benefits as specified for each patient. Gathers all necessary data or documentation to make determination on third party payors. Obtains insurance cards and signatures on required forms not obtained by admitting and scans information in to system. Interacts with Social Service, Utilization Review, Case Mangers and Nursing Units involving patient financial concerns. Notifies U/R of pre-certification needed when insurance information is obtained for same day admits. Keeps supervisor updated of any problems, which may delay completion of job duties. May need to cover additional areas of the Financial Counselor Unit as needed. This position requires you to become a “Certified Indiana Navigator.” You must maintain your certification as a condition to your employment.  

 

Required Skills & Qualifications:

GED or High School Diploma required. Strong experience in customer service required. Previous experience in hospital/physician office setting preferred. Previous financial counseling/collection experience preferred. Certified Indiana Navigator training and certification preferred. Ability to discuss financial matters with patients. Knowledge of insurance benefits; experience with insurance benefit verification and/or pre-certification preferred. Medical Terminology helpful and familiarity with CPT-4 and ICD-9 codes. Knowledge of IN Medicaid programs desired. Ability to speak and communicate in Spanish would be beneficial. Strong written/verbal communication skills. Basic level of proficiency with MS Outlook, Word and Excel.  Must be proficient with a 10 key calculator, detail oriented with a good numeric aptitude and typing skills of 35 wpm with accuracy. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and multi-task while working in a collaborative, team environment with a positive attitude.   Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and work under deadlines. Must be flexible to float to St. Mary Medical Center or St. Catherine Hospital to fill vacancies.
