This is a Hybrid position with an on campus presence in Cambridge. Position Description: The Financial Analyst plays a vital role in enabling the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) to reach thousands of educators annually with the highest-quality professional programs in education (PPE). Reporting to the Director of Finance, this role has primary responsibility for developing, projecting, and reporting on budgets and financial plans, for both the department and its individual programs, representing $20 million of annual revenue. As a key player in PPE, this role partners closely with leaders throughout the organization to analyze financial performance and identify opportunities to enhance PPE’s services. The Financial Analyst is a key advisor to financial and organizational strategy, acting with independent initiative and on the Director’s behalf as needed. Responsibilities: • Department Reporting and Projections: Prepare monthly reports and projections based on analyzing and evaluating department results. Conduct monthly financial analysis, provide year-end projections, forecast future financial scenarios, identify funding shortfalls and recommend alternative spending plans. Collaborate on overall office budget to capture historical data, as well as enable forecasting and long-term planning; perform timely monthly audit of financial reports for leadership. • Department Representation: Serve as the Director of Finance’s senior partner in all discussions with HGSE and Harvard University finance divisions, representing the Director and PPE as needed. • Department Budgeting: Serve as partner to the Director of Finance, the Interim Managing Director, and other department leadership in developing the $20 million annual operating budgets and multi-year financial planning. Capture historical data, as well as enable forecasting and long-term planning. Prepares initial budgets, templates, and guidance, and manages alternative scenarios proposed by multiple senior stakeholders. Participate in the annual multi-year financial plan (5 years), including projections and forecasts as required by the School and University. • Program Budgeting and Projections: Work closely with Portfolio Directors and unit leaders to develop programs’ operating budgets, project financial outcomes, and analyze and evaluate financial results, including significant variances and trends. Devise and implement recommendations regarding internal procedures, communications, documentation, and role of budget managers. Develop materials and train budget managers to ensure optimal fiscal planning and financial compliance with PPE and HGSE policies and procedures. • Pricing: Partner with the Portfolio Directors and the Directors of Marketing, Engagement, and Finance to analyze and recommend pricing for open enrollment programs. Analyze and evaluate custom program opportunities to recommend pricing and contribute to proposals. • Custom Programs: Manage the financials of custom programs including billing, collection, posting G/L transactions, and reporting. Participate in the review of and execution (closeout) of contracts. • Finance Operations: Play an active role in Finance operations by working closely with the Finance Manager and the team of Finance Coordinators, modeling inclusive leadership, contributing to overall process improvements, and shouldering the team’s load during peak times. Performs complex monthly general ledger close outs and submits journal entries that will affect Harvard’s general ledger. Accounting transactions include journals to the G/L, pre-paid entries, accruals, and deferred revenue transactions in support of monthly and annual closings. • Special Projects: Conduct analyses to respond to ad-hoc queries and strategic requests.
