Finance Generalist or Senior Finance Generalist

Finance Generalists are responsible for a variety of work across various financial disciplines. They possess a solid financial background, either gained through work experience or education, which allows them to assume a wide range of duties across multiple areas, including accounting, budget, payroll, financial analysis, or purchasing. Finance Generalists independently execute a range of financial responsibilities, based on the organization's needs.

 

The Contemplative Sciences Center (CSC) is seeking applications for a Finance Generalist or Senior Finance Generalist to help build, oversee and manage the finances of a rapidly growing organization. Reporting to the Chief of Staff and working closely with the Commons Director and Operations Coordinator, the Finance Manager will support the CSC in all aspects of its financial needs. The ideal candidate wants to be part of a collaborative organization, is excited about building processes and brings with them a curious approach to problem solving.    

The CSC is housed within the Contemplative Commons within the University of Virginia. The mission of CSC is to combine contemplation, connection, and research to enhance flourishing. CSC pursues this mission through a variety of programs and initiatives in academic classrooms, residential life, research, scholarship, and social innovation. 

CSC is seeking a finance generalist to help carry out day-to-day management of its finances. Responsibilities include: 

Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Vendor Management: 

Oversee and/or assist with the preparation of purchase orders and payment vouchers, ensuring that bills are paid promptly and in compliance with University requirements and resolve any discrepancies with vendors as needed.  

Assist with vendor set-up and coordinate purchases, ensuring that bills are paid promptly and in compliance with University requirements and resolve any discrepancies as needed. 

Support the Operations team in fulfilling AR-related compliance needs (PCI compliance, etc.) 

 

Monthly Accounting Support:  

Prepare and approve monthly Account Certifications 

Reconcile differences and work with units across Grounds to enter accurate journal entries 

Process payroll accounting adjustments and journal entries. 

Monitor chart of account use (FDM) to ensure that staff are maintaining consistency and budget alignment in their use of the FDM. 

Ensures internal accounting controls are in place and compliance with the controls occur. 

Program Budget Management & Grants Support 

Work with CSC staff to ensure accurate and up-to-date budgets for all programs that CSC manages and runs 

Track fund accounts, special projects, or tasks to ensure appropriate entries are made and monitor the account balances. 

Prepare the annual CSC budget in cooperation with the Chief of Staff and other CSC leadership 

Support the research unit in understanding and managing their budgets and provide grant budget preparation and reporting as needed 

 

General & Special Projects 

Provide on-going support and back-up for other Budget and Finance team members, thus ensuring continuous support 

Troubleshoot various issues that might arise and need quick analysis and turnaround. 

Support special projects as needed 

The Finance Generalist will also participate in the wider work of CSC and its mission, including attendance at CSC staff meetings, attending contemplative practices and trainings, and more. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Finance Generalist:

Bachelor's degree required 

2 years of experience in a related field required. Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree. 

Senior Finance Generalist:

Bachelor's degree required 

5 years of experience in a related field required. Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree. 

 

Skills:

Problem-solving skills and the ability to recognize when a problem should be escalated to within the team. 

Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to understand that both abilities are important with emphasis on being a team player. 

Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) experience with preference given to applicants with at least Intermediate-level skills in Excel 

Knowledge of UVA systems, including Workday, Adaptive, and/or UBI (Qlik) is a plus. 

 

Compensation and Benefits: 

The hiring range for this position is $65,000 - $85,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check. Physical Demands and In-person/Remote Work Policies: 

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. Ideally, the candidate can work from the Contemplative Commons in Charlottesville, VA one to two days a week. We are building a close culture based on contemplative practices, many of which require an in-person presence. However, we understand that many need or prefer to be virtual and we will strive to find the appropriate balance for the right candidate.
