Finance Generalist

The Dean’s Office within the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for a Finance Generalist. The School of Engineering and Applied Science consists of 9 departments across the field of engineering. The school has seen tremendous growth in student population and faculty, as well as in its research expenditures in recent years. Reporting to the Senior Finance Associate, the Finance Generalist will work closely with the Finance and Budget team as well as Dean’s office areas and departments. 

Finance Generalists are hybrid positions, responsible for a variety of professional level work across various financial disciplines. They possess a solid financial background, either gained through work experience or education, which allows them to assume a wide range of duties across multiple areas, including accounting, budget, payroll, financial aid, financial analysis, purchasing, or treasury. The Finance Generalist has responsibilities that are supportive of the Senior Finance Associate and involve working closely with this role. 

Finance Generalist responsibilities include the following, including, not limited to:

Manage account setup for various funding opportunities for departments including Dean's investments and allocations from central funding units.Prepare account reconciliations following all financial and auditing procedures within the mandated timeframe. Verify that data entry, coding, and documentation are correct for each transaction.Preparation of monthly reports detailing department balances including startup, F&A and endowed chairs.Assist in analyzing accounts to project future cash needs, and prepare journal entries and accounting adjustments as necessary.Assist in analysis of the Dean's sources and uses reports including year-to-date and projection comparisons.Coordinate purchases to ensure timely payment of invoices, in compliance with University policies, and resolve any discrepancies.Receive, review, and process incoming checks for deposit, ensuring they are recorded with correct account codes and supporting documentation.Monitor suspense accounts monthly and take action as needed, including entering payroll costing allocations and adjustments.Monitor chart of account use (FDM) to ensure that departments are maintaining consistency and budget alignment in their use of the FDM.In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: At least two years of experience. Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Licensure: None

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience using UBI and WorkdayProblem-solving skills and the ability to recognize when a problem should be escalated to someone within the team.Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), with preference given to candidates with intermediate or higher Excel skills.Experience interpreting and applying UVA and Commonwealth of Virginia policies and procedures, specifically those related to purchasing and reimbursementsProven experience in managing change within a unit or department.Skilled in creating managerial reports and presenting them to leadership. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
