The Fiber Lab Tester is responsible for performing final test on all completed cable products Prior to testing the Tester moves the cable reels to the final test work station verifies the factory order checks the product specifications reviews special customer requests and preps the cable ends to allow access to the fiber for testing The testing involves performing physical and optical measurements on the cable After testing the Tester is responsible for completing all required documentation and moving the reel to the Lagging Prep Area
Key Performance Areas
Cable Testing Test the transmission capability of the cable with an OTDR The OTDR test the transmission capability by inducing a light pulse into each optical fiber in the cable and measuring the amount of light returning to the source The attenuation of each fiber is measured to verify the cables transmission capability During this automated testing time the Tester reviews data completes paperwork preps reels cleans the work area and assists other Testers with verification of the cable print length
Cable Test Preparation As needed rolls the cable reels into the final testing area verifies the factory order reviews the customer specifications and checks the cable print and paperwork
During this process several checks are made and recorded including according to cable construction water penetration cable outer diameter armor jacket and buffer tube dimensions armor and copper pair continuity measurements The cable jacket and buffer tubes are carefully removed and the optical fibers are separated stripped of coating cleaned and spliced into the test/splice tubes of the OTDR for testing
Documentation Completes required paperwork files all certified test data if applicable makes copies laminates and attaches certified data to reels
Special considerations Must pay close attention to detail and have the ability to work unassisted with limited supervision Emphasis will be placed on improving computer skills due to the implementation of the Production Tracking system and the automated testing and measurement systems

Detailed knowledge of the final test equipment and processes in the final testing area Much of this work requires performing a few routine tasks over and over again to set procedures and sequence
This is precision work that requires adherence to and achieving exacting levels of performance precise set limits tolerances and standards A detailed understanding of cable construction and manufacturing specifications is required The work involves making judgments and reaching conclusions based on objective criteria
The job can be stressful when critical test equipment is not performing right For example when the optics of a finished cable cannot be verified as meeting specifications the cable cannot be shipped
Interpersonal relationships are important factors because the Final Tester must work with the manufacturing associates the team leaders engineers and other Testers

Matric Certificate or Equivalent
Formal company training includes one month of training in the areas of OTDR operation dimension measurement and documentation procedures factory orders cable specifications safety and fiber handling training Supervised on the job training is typically needed to learn how to prepare cable for testing operate the OTDR test equipment take dimension measurements and prepare test reports
Three months 90 days is typical to achieve mastery of all operations How to troubleshoot measurement problems understanding cable traces steps and breaks is critical
