Federal Relations Specialist
**Overview** Identifies, reviews, and tracks federal health-related information in support of The Joint Commission’s goals and priorities. Supports the Government Relations Office staff in its daily public policy work so that The Joint Commission is aware of and updated on significant issues, legislation, regulations, and other relevant information that would affect its advocacy, policymaking, standards development, survey operations and other strategic initiatives important to The Joint Commission. Ensures timely communications of this information to other departments to fully inform them of national issues affecting The Joint Commission’s work. Receives additional assignments from Associate Director/Director/EVP as needed. **Responsibilities** + Performs environmental scans on a daily basis of key national, federal, and other health related print and electronic sources and key websites to ascertain the emergence of important new information relevant to The Joint Commission’s work. + Disseminates this information to key Joint Commission staff in a timely manner. + Monitors relevant legislation, and summarizes legislation when necessary. Attends Congressional hearings, briefings, and other relevant events as assigned. + Follows information from national agencies, private sector sources and federal organizations such as the Government Accountability Office; the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission; the National Academy of Medicine; and other similar entities. + Monitors the regulatory agendas of federal departments and agencies such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS); the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS); the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA); the HHS and VA Offices of the Inspector General; and the HHS Office of the National Coordinator. + Proactively seeks new information of importance to The Joint Commission by identifying new information sources. + Conducts research on topics as assigned to support federal work. + Tracks relevant policy information from CMS for The Joint Commission’s deeming programs. + Works with colleague to compile list of actions of interest for internal dissemination and sends other pertinent information throughout the organization in a timely manner. + Performs additional duties relevant to keeping The Joint Commission informed on health care legislative, policy, and other relevant areas of Joint Commission interest, such as contributing to reports, creating presentations, congressional documents, and other similar documents. + Assists in the identification of key information, including information difficult to obtain without resourceful and proactive behavior. + Keeps abreast of latest developments in health care including legislative, policy, and regulatory issues. + Analyzes, compiles, and synthesizes information into understandable and usable formats. + Actively contributes to the knowledge base and library of information on health care legislation and policy. + Prepares legislative and regulatory summaries, talking points, issue briefs, and policy materials for executive and senior staff. + Assists with preparation of presentations, memoranda, reports and written materials as assigned. + Assists with preparation of formal letters of federal matters of interest. **Qualifications** + The level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through the completion of at least a bachelor’s degree. + Ability to monitor and manage legislative, policy, and regulatory issues. Knowledge of health care and health policy issues. 2 years’ experience. + Skills associated with proactively seeking information, and knowledge of Internet resources in health care. + Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with members of health care organizations. Experience working with professional associations, clinical experts, and task forces desirable. + Requires minimum amount of direction. + Possesses excellent writing skills.
