Job Description
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Old Dominion University invites applications for a position specializing in Applied Mathematics to begin in Fall 2025. We are especially looking for faculty whose research is in an area of applied mathematics that complements and enhances the existing research groups in applied mathematics are especially encouraged to apply. This is an open rank (at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank), annual 10-month tenure track/tenured appointment, with initial rank commensurate with experience.
The position carries a teaching load of 2 courses/semester, with a reduced course load during the first two years to support the establishment of a strong research program. In addition to teaching, the appointee will actively pursue external research grants and supervise Ph.D. student research. Undergraduate research supervision and interdisciplinary research collaboration with other researchers at ODU or with external partners are also encouraged.
Candidates applying for a senior faculty appointment (Associate or Full Professor) will also play a leadership role in the department, including mentoring junior faculty, as part of their duties and responsibilities.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications
Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics or a related discipline. Candidates who provide evidence that their Ph.D. will be conferred by July 25, 2025 will be considered for an Assistant Professor position.
Candidates applying for a tenured position must have previously earned tenure and have a research record sufficient to warrant the award of tenure at ODU , a Carnegie R1 institution.
Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities
Preferred Qualifications
+ A strong publication record in respected journals, conferences, research program that complements and expands that of current faculty within the Department of Mathematics & Statistics.
+ A history of successful funding.
+ Experience in grant proposal writing.
+ Teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level.
Experience mentoring students and faculty is highly preferred for candidates applying for senior faculty appointments.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Old Dominion University currently has 24 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 19 teaching faculty, and several adjunct faculty. Opportunities exist for collaboration and interaction with faculty members in the Department, other Departments of The College of Sciences and the University, ODU’s Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center ( VMASC ) and at nearby institutions: the National Institute of Aerospace ( NIA ); the NASA Langley Research Center; and the Jefferson Laboratory. The Department has robust undergraduate and graduate programs: a B.S. degree program in Mathematics with more than 170 undergraduate majors; and M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in Computational and Applied Mathematics with options in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Biostatistics, and Big Data Analytics with approximately 40 graduate students.
