About 3 Main Surgical Unit:

38-Bed Post-Op Care: We specialize in thoracic surgery recovery and act as Shadyside’s surgical stepdown unit. High-Acuity Patients: From minimally invasive esophagectomy to lobe resections, we provide top-notch care. Cardiac Expertise: We handle interventional cardiac cases from cath and electrophysiology labs. Dynamic Learning Environment: Our nurses gain hands-on experience with various procedures. Fast-Paced Teamwork: Our Registered Nurses work rotation shifts including weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor. 

Here’s how we support our nurses:

Generous Sign-On Bonus of up to $20,000 Up to five and a half weeks of Paid Time Off annually, plus seven paid holidays each year. Tuition reimbursement of up to $6,000 per academic year at any accredited institution, available to employees and their dependents (plus discounts for UPMC employees including no-cost RN-BSN/MSN options!).

Responsibilities:

Developing Others:

Passionately precepts students, graduate nurses, and new hires. Analyzes clinical and behavioral situations to identify learning opportunities. Seeks feedback and applies continuous professional improvement. Supports continuous learning by sharing research, presenting on the unit, and supporting journal clubs.

Patient Care:

Applies the nursing process within Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment. Formulates daily goals and care plans with patients as partners. Practices solid communication skills to articulate patient conditions and recommend care changes. Ensures comprehensive patient documentation to promote caregiver communication. Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues. Incorporates goals from national professional organizations and health systems to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction. Builds healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.

Workplace Relationships:

Builds and mends relationships among colleagues within a healthy workplace framework. Role models cultural awareness and addresses horizontal violence and impairment. Maintains a balance between work and personal life through prioritization and delegation.

Quality Improvement:

Identifies opportunities for clinical quality and workplace improvement. Applies evidence-based practice regularly. Serves on or leads teams that innovate in patient care or support a healthy workforce.

Professional Leadership:

Serves as a role model in clinical expertise, teaching, specialized resource nursing, and evidence-based practice.
