+ 10 years progressively responsible experience ideally in environs of teaching and learning including experience teaching at the College/University level.
+ Supervisory experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
+ Qualified to teach one course in the FAS annually, in either the fall or spring semester. Given how rapidly higher education is changing, the new Executive Director is expected to have remained an active teacher.
+ Deep understanding of higher education pedagogical contexts and priorities and the ability and commitment to readily transform theory into practice.
+ Demonstrated aptitude for learning and applying new technologies quickly and effectively, including experience innovating with Generative AI.
+ Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and manage team members from a range of backgrounds, disciplines, and levels of expertise.
+ Demonstrated ability to work consistently and constructively in a fast-paced environment.
+ Demonstrated ability to engage in confidential matters with appropriate discretion.
+ Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills; must be able to communicate effectively with a range of constituents.
+ Substantial writing experience, including writing clear and succinct prose accessible to graduate students and faculty (e.g., for a website), as well as fundraising and grants experience.
+ Strong financial acumen and analytic skills.
+ Ability to collaborate actively and seamlessly with a range of units across the FAS and Harvard.
+ Demonstrated success in initiating and leading innovative collaborative projects, achieving exceptional operational results, and maintaining a strong reputation for being an organized and dynamic leader.

Major responsibilities of the Executive Director include but are not limited to:
Strategic Direction
+ Collaborate with the Faculty Director in developing innovative Center strategies.
+ Partner with the Faculty Director on all aspects of Center initiatives.
+ Communicate effective stories of the pathbreaking and boundary-defying teaching and learning undertaken by Harvard faculty and students.
Managerial Responsibilities
+ Develop and execute, in partnership with the Faculty Director, the Bok Center’s goals, objectives, mission, and vision.
+ Work collaboratively with colleagues across Harvard units to recruit and retain first-rate Bok Center staff.
+ Lead, direct, and manage effectively the Bok Center’s 20+ person staff.
+ Ensure training and development plans are in place and executed for all Bok Center staff.
+ Create and maintain high morale and professionalism within the Bok Center, including communicating transparently with the Faculty Director and the entire staff.
+ Together with the Faculty Director, oversee all aspects of the Bok Center’s budget.
Financial Oversight
+ In partnership with the Faculty Director, oversee the Bok Center’s financial portfolio, ensuring that resources are used effectively and efficiently, maintaining a strong financial position while making strategic investments in people and projects.
+ In partnership with the Faculty Director, oversee the Center’s annual budget, and multi-year financial plans.
+ Work with the Faculty Director to coordinate efforts within the University Development Office to define fundraising priorities, develop philanthropic proposals, and support engagement with donors.
+ Create new resources to support all members of the FAS’s teaching and learning communities.
Build Relationships
+ Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders within the FAS and Harvard, as well as with external constituents.
+ Participate actively on key committees and initiatives across the FAS, Harvard, and in the profession.
+ Successfully represent the Bok Center within and beyond the FAS and Harvard.
+ Engage actively with faculty, staff, and students across the FAS and beyond in support of the Bok Center and teaching and learning at Harvard.

The Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning supports all members of the FAS teaching and learning community – including ladder and non-ladder faculty, postdoctoral fellows, teaching assistants, graduate students (including teaching fellows), and undergraduates (including course assistants) – in continually reimagining and adapting the classroom, and teaching, learning, and professional growth more broadly, given rapid changes in higher education, technology, and society.
The Executive Director is a key leadership position responsible for partnering with the Richard L. Menschel Faculty Director, to whom they report, to transform the Bok Center into and maintain the Bok Center as a leading and integrated center for innovative teaching and learning, in alignment with the FAS and Harvard.
