Exception Handling Specialist IV

Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:

Position Summary:

Responsible for troubleshooting and solving issues for the laboratory. Serves as an internal and external resource for specimen and testing information.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Effectively utilizes resources to maximize productivity, determine priority and ensure quality serviceEfficiently uses the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for ordering, crediting, noting out, canceling tests, and determining specimen acceptabilityIdentifies proper tubes, containers, transport media, and storage temperature for each test typeProvides specimen requirements, reference ranges and information on specimen stabilityWorks amongst other internal departments to best resolve problemsUnderstands test requesting, labeling, specimen storage and retrieval, and tracking of all specimens received for testingUnderstands current work lists and how to track all ordered tests analyzedUtilizes customer service skills to effectively and efficiently handle inquiriesHandles administrative duties that may include maintaining recordsAdheres to departmental policies and proceduresServes as a technical resources for the organizationUtilizes education within work assignments and organizational objectives of complexityInterprets results based on stability, transport temperature, and valuesHandles changing, removing and transferring of resultsConducts audits as needed such as fresh tissue logs, correlations studies, instrument or software applications and statisticsPerforms advanced duties with minimal directionPerforms all other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

Required:  Bachelor or Associate of Science Degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical or biological science obtained from an accredited institution with Medical Technologist Certification.Preferred: One year of medical technology training or experience in a laboratory performing high complexity testing.

Licensure and Certifications:

Required:  State licensure if applicable

Physical Requirements: 

Requires manipulation of tools, objects, and equipment using the following physical motions:  pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching above shoulder height, grasping with one hand or both, pinching with thumb and forefinger, twisting with hand and wrist, climbing under, lifting up, lifting down and reaching underRequires light to medium lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 30 poundsRoutinely requires visual discrimination of color, size, shape, and motility

Work Conditions:

Environmentally controlled medical environment with exposure to noise. Fast-paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent situations.  May come into contact with contagious pathogens and hazardous chemicals.  May be required to operate fire and safety equipment or follow other safety procedures.
