As an important member of GFL, our Equipment Operators safely run various mechanical equipment essential to the transfer of waste material. Whether it be operating a forklift, bobcat, backhoe, track hoe, compactor and/or steer equipment, Equipment Operators serve the community and contribute to the sustainability of the environment.
A day in the life* of an Equipment Operator:
Upon arriving at work, meet with the team, assess all upcoming duties and associated equipment, and prepare for the day aheadYour morning tasks may include:Operating necessary equipment to bale and load waste materials into trailersChecking and add fluids to properly grease/lubricate equipmentUsing steering wheels, shifters, levelers, buttons and petals to steer, guide or drive equipment to a particular siteCompleting of daily cleaning duties to ensure trash is removed from tracks of heavy equipmentUsing a two-way radio to communicate with co-workers in the field or officeCompleting inspections or maintenance checks of equipmentMid-shift, take a hard-earned break, have lunch with the team and catch up with coworkersPerform afternoon tasks, either continuing projects from the morning or starting new onesBefore heading home, clean up your work areas and tracks to make for a smooth next day*schedule may vary depending on the day-to-day, start time, etc.
What’s required:
Equipment Operators must meet the following qualifications:
Completion of forklift certificationWillingness to obtain Transfer Station/Landfill Operations CertificationFollow instructions and work under little supervisionCapacity to read and understand the meaning of equipment gaugesUse fine motor coordination with arm, hand, finger and leg dexterityWorking Conditions:
