Environmental Project Officer
State of Montana
We are looking for an Environmental Project Officer to join our team in the State Superfund Unit of the Waste Management and Remediation Division. The State Superfund Unit facilitates the investigation and cleanup of hazardous substances that typically occur at sites with the following activities: mining, petroleum refining, railroad fueling and maintenance, smelting, dry cleaning, and wood treating, truck roll overs, pipeline releases, and spills, among others. Releases from these types of sites are ranked based on potential risks to public health and the environment. Site investigation and cleanup activities focus primarily on sites which have maximum or high priority rank, unless the investigation and cleanup is undertaken voluntarily. Typically, the State Superfund Unit does not work on federal superfund sites where EPA is involved, nor does it depend on Federal funding. The Environmental Project Officer is responsible for providing agency assistance in project management for the investigation, evaluation, and cleanup of uncontrolled hazardous substance sites in Montana under the appropriate regulatory authority. This position ensures protection of Montana's environment through application and knowledge of environmental laws and regulations. The Environmental Project Officer must plan, coordinate, and direct interdisciplinary technical studies as well as evaluate project alternatives relative to applicable environmental laws. This position reviews all project and technical documents to ensure regulatory compliance and will aide in the selection of technically appropriate, cost-effective remedies to preserve and protect the State of Montana's interest and obligations at a particular site. Project management requires this position to act as a liaison to the public and coordinate with various stakeholder groups. At the Department of Environmental Quality, our ultimate goal is to champion a healthy environment for a thriving Montana. DEQ employees are the heart of our organization. We value the people and invest in their professional growth, promoting a culture of cross-agency collaboration as we find solutions to the environmental challenges we face. DEQ values – leadership, accountability, customer service, efficiency, excellence, and decision making – are fundamental to our work. Come be a part of the Department of Environmental Quality! The Environmental Project Officer position includes a career ladder for professional development and pay progression. Minimum requirements include: • Bachelor's degree in earth science, physical, biological, environmental, or engineering. • Two years of experience in natural resource processes, remediation, mine waste reclamation or other related hazardous substance investigation and cleanup. • Preferred experience with customer service, public speaking, project management, procurement, contracting and experience in program field. • Current valid Driver's License and clean driving record in accordance with State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy. • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training is required upon hire and Medical Surveillance Program enrollment is recommended. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
