Heidelberg Materials is seeking a qualified Environmental Professional for our Southeast Region, based in our Duluth, GA office. This position will be responsible for nine (9) mine sites, eight (8) ready-mix concrete sites and three (3) cement terminals in Georgia and will report to the Director of Environmental, Land and Sustainability - Southeast Region.
Job Description Summary
We are seeking a qualified environmental / sustainability specialist to join our team. In this position, you will be responsible for the permitting, compliance, and reporting activities required to ensure compliance with environmental requirements as well as helping drive progress to reduce our carbon footprint, minimize waste, identify recycling opportunities, promote biodiversity, and support water management throughout the region. In addition, the individual will play a major supporting role in community outreach and education programs and assist in making the company a leader in Sustainability.
Our ideal candidate will be a qualified individual who is comfortable working side by side with operations in heavy industrial settings and values being a team player and is a critical thinking problem solver who wants to learn and grow into a multi-media Environmental Manager. All candidates must demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with a diverse workforce, operations and leadership personnel, consultants, and regulatory agencies. Your ultimate goal will be to help us comply with all federal, state, and local environmental regulations and to implement and support sustainability initiatives. The individual should have strong working knowledge of industrial operations preferably with aggregate, ready mix and recycling operations.
Job Responsibilities
Mange necessary environmental permitting for (9) mine sites, (8) RMC plants and (3) cement terminals, ensuring that the facilities maintain compliance with all permit conditions.Support the annual sustainability data reporting process and lead the follow-up process of the HC Sustainability Commitments 2030Assist facility management with project planning and associated permittingPrepare monthly quarterly, and annual NPDES, reclamation, and air quality reportsAssist refining the sustainability strategy, priorities, measurements, data collection, and plans.Prepare applications and obtain, update, and maintain plans, permits, and standard operating procedures.Obtains and provides oversight and manages environmental consultants.Maintains and updates the company’s internet-based tracking program for the assigned sites.Coordinates and administers environmental and sustainability related training programs to ensure operations personnel has adequate knowledge to comply with environmental regulations and sustainable practices.Inspect and audit facilities and systems for conformance to Federal, State, and Local applicable environmental regulations.Investigates complaints and suspected violations. Interviews individuals to determine the nature of alleged violations and obtain evidence of violations.Monitor and proactively report environmental performance. Communicating to senior leadership on progress and challengesPartner with operations teams and work with each facility unit to understand operational footprint, trends and opportunities for improvement.Help drive progress related to GHG emissions, renewable energy, zero waste, recycling, reclamation and biodiversity, and water stewardship.Traveling to our regional locations providing environmental and sustainability leadership to the network of engineers & operations personnel.Develop strong relationships with our operational and corporate leaders.
Other duties and tasks, including travel, as necessary and/or assigned to effectively carry out job responsibilities and maximize the effectiveness of this position.30% - 50% travel within the assigned area (mostly day trips)5% travel outside the assigned area
Essential Experience and SkillsBachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or a relevant field.Three to five years' experience in a similar role in a mining or manufacturing environment or as an Environmental Consultant.Exceptional communication, project management, and organizational skills Working knowledge of soil erosion and stormwater control design principlesMust be self-motivated, able to work independently and multi-task, and capable of completing tasks within specific schedules and deadlines. Strong communication and project management skills. Ability to plan and lead projects that require interfaces with multiple stakeholders and differing levels of management.Diplomacy and sensitivity to highly confidential information.Excellent Windows-based computer system skills.
Preferred Experience and Skills
Three to five years experience in a similar role in a mining or manufacturing environment or as an Environmental ConsultantMining or ready-mix concrete industry experienceKnowledgeable in sustainability practices.Proficiency in AutoCAD or ArcGISKnowledgeable in sedimentation and erosion control.Experience in effective public presentation and speaking and interaction with government agency representatives, neighbors, and community groups.
Work EnvironmentThe job entails working in a professional office environment but also requires extensive time visiting the heavy industrial mine sites where the conditions include large mobile equipment, elevated noise levels and exposure to weather conditions.
