Enterprise Editor
The San Francisco Chronicle seeks a senior editor to help deliver some of the highest priority enterprise stories in the newsroom across several desks, including breaking, metro, politics, sports, data, arts and entertainment, and food and wine. The enterprise editor will shepherd ambitious pieces including profiles, short and medium-term investigations, news features, narratives and “lede-all” stories about major events.
Candidates should be strong editors dedicated not only to polishing copy but to improving the structure, tone and framing of pieces in a nurturing and collaborative manner. Stories under the purview of this editor will be distinguished by their complexity, sensitivity and importance, and by their potential to become bigger and better.
The enterprise editor will work closely with colleagues on every desk, at times directly editing a story and at other times offering an additional round of editing as well as support. Key to this role will be working with the audience team on publication strategy, and working with desks including photo, video, design and graphics to think about visual assets that maximize a story’s impact.
We are looking for a positive and creative communicator who thrives in a collaborative environment and holds a deep commitment to journalism that is fair and inclusive.
What you will do:
● Shape and edit stories produced by the Chronicle.
● Build fruitful relationships with journalists across the newsroom.
● Work collaboratively with teams, including digital, photo, data and design.
● Coordinate planning of in-depth stories, managing timelines and workflows.
● Take a leadership role in the newsroom in developing reporting skills and tools.
● Ensure that resources used on high-impact reporting reflect the diversity of experiences and needs in the Bay Area.
What it will take to be successful:
● At least five years’ experience at a daily newspaper, magazine or web publication or the equivalent as a reporter and/or editor.
● Demonstrated expertise in reporting and writing techniques, strong news judgment, creativity and meticulousness.
● Ability to edit complex accountability and narrative pieces to make them more clear and compelling.
● Knowledge of multimedia storytelling, audience engagement and other strategies to broaden readership and deepen impact.
● Ability to collaborate with all newsroom teams and work in a fast-changing news environment.
In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in California.
