Engineer I, Senior, Technology

The ABS Ship Design and Innovation Center, located in Shanghai, China was established to enhance our global network of technology centers and supports our mission of safety in the region and around the world. As an Engineer in this center, you will participate in or lead research and development projects with regional and global clients, with a focus on aluminum alloy based materials. 

What You Will Do:

Conduct research and assess the maturity of new technologies in a wide range of materials related topics with the focus on: Aluminum alloy-based materials Material characterization procedures and requirements Materials inspection and testing Failure mode and effect analysis Drive maturity of technologies within materials and processes, and undertake technical problem solving, including supporting operational needs from time to time Develop guidance and classification requirements for the marine and offshore industry on topics relating to materials. Support ABS technical community on queries regarding materials. Maintain and demonstrate thought leadership through technical publications, conference presentations and panel discussions. Participate in industrial committees to development and enhance technical capabilities.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

Minimum bachelor’s degree in material engineering, material science, and other relevant disciplines; Masters or PhD in appropriate discipline preferred.   Relevant experience in shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, offshore energy company, university, or classification society Bachelor’s degree holders with minimum 3-year relevant experience and fresh graduates with PhD or Masters’ degree are welcome to apply.  Demonstrated experience in the development or assessment of manufacturing process themes for aluminum alloys

Required/Preferred Education Requirements

Professional or chartered engineer license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge and experience in materials processing, testing and measurement  Knowledge and experience in gas cargo containment systems Metallurgy, processing, and performance assessment knowledge with focus on aluminum alloys Knowledge of materials testing techniques for metallic materials i.e. tensile, toughness, faitgue etc. Knowledge of characterization techniques such as microscopy, fractography etc Knowledge in failure mode and effect analysis Understanding of broader manufacturing methods within the maritime and offshore industry Excellent technical, interpersonal, communication, and writing skills in English

It Would Be Nice If You Had

Marine and offshore industry experience will be a bonus

Knowledge and experience with aluminum manufacturing, rolling mill or metal-forming processes will be advantageous 

Candidates with experience in IMO Type B containment systems will be preferred
