Endoscopy Technician (1.0)

The Endoscopy Technician works under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Physician and  performs various duties including technical support for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures,  specimen collection, cleaning and maintenance of equipment, assisting with patient transport, as  well as other tasks as needed.

Essential Job Functions
•  Supports and models behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic’s mission, vision, values, code of business conduct and service expectations. Meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency standards as it relates to the environment, employee, patient safety or job performance.
•  Assists the RN and physician with performing procedures and providing patient care. Procedures include, but are not limited to EGD, colonoscopy, polypectomy, biopsies, PEG placement, EUS, and ERCP;
•  Have working knowledge of scopes, maintenance, and care;
•  Handles and labels specimens correctly and according to organizational and departmental policies;
•  Assists in transport of patients throughout hospital;
•  Prepares room, anticipates and verifies all equipment needs prior to procedure
•  Maintains aseptic technique and universal precautions
•  Cleans and properly reprocesses endoscopes according to infection control and manufacturer guidelines
•  Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment
•  Must be able to stand for long periods of time
•  Performs all other duties as assigned or as needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
• Performs and assists the RN and physician with performing endoscopic procedures
•  Operates complex Endoscopy equipment including, but not limited to safe handling and care of endoscopes, maintenance of GI image capture software and OER-Pro endoscope reprocessor.
•  Performs at an expert clinical level and assists the physician in the performance of adult endoscopic procedures; including both diagnostic and interventional.
•  Implements safe, competence and efficient procedure care to Endoscopy patients within policies, procedures and standards of care across a variety of populations and complexity of situations.
•  Duties for this position include but are not limited to assisting the physician in endoscopic procedures including, but not limited to EGD, colonoscopy, Peg tube placement, foreign body removal, ERCP, and EUS. Intra procedure patient care within Endoscopy scope of practice. High-level disinfection of all Endoscopes per regulatory guidelines.
•  Foresees potential problems, adapts priorities and plans independently with and without medical direction in response to general information/data indicative of potential urgent or emergent life-threatening risks, initiates action to reduce or correct the risk.
•  Incorporate cultural diversity and age appropriate care into all aspects of patient care and communications.
•  Become CPR certified within 6 months of hire date.
•  Utilize time management concepts or maximize time effectively.
•  Communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
•  Utilize critical thinking skills.
•  Respond calmly and professionally in difficult situations and when dealing with difficult patients and/or family members.
•  Possibility of exposure to ionizing radiation.
•  Moderate to heavy lifting of patients, equipment and supplies.
•  Needle and sharp instrument usage.
•  Professional conduct when dealing with co-workers, patients, and visitors. Resourcefulness in dealing with simple to moderate complexity requires ability to prioritize duties with assistance of nursing personnel.
•  Practices within the scope and level of certification/licensure.
•  Risk of urgent or emergent life-threatening events needing appropriate action to reduce the risk.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
•  High school diploma or equivalent

Experience
•  1 to 3 years of Endoscopy or related experience preferred

Certifications and Licenses
•  CNA, PCT, LPN, LVN, or surgical technician preferred
•  BLS Certification Required
•  Must obtain an Associate Program Certificate of Completion through the Society of Gastrointestinal Nurses and Associates within 1 year of hire
