Responds to the medical emergency calls, drives to the scene and provides basic life support to the victims before they are transported to the hospital.
Evaluates the nature and extent of illness/injury to determine the right course of actions. Conduct patient assessment, including interpretation of ECG.
Provides medical aid such as AED, CPR, prevents spinal damage, ventilation, control severe bleeding; prevent shock, bandaging wounds, etc., to stabilize their condition.
Administration of activated charcoal, oral glucose and oxygen.
Constantly assesses the patient enroute to the emergency facility, administers additional care as indicated or directed by medical control.
Maintains vehicles and medical and communication equipment, and replenishes first-aid equipment and supplies.
Restocks all supplies in the ambulance and replace used blankets, linens and other supplies.
Cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting protocols.
Continuously reassures the patient enroute to the emergency facility.
Assists all EMT paramedics in efficient advance life support care system.
Performs direct illness/injury assessment, provides basic emergency pre-hospital patient care to the ill and injured prior to and during ambulance transfer, and transfer of information to receiving facility.
Maintains operational and functional readiness of ambulance unit, medical and other equipment, to ensure continuum of emergency services.
Works closely with communications officers, field supervisors, emergency department and other hospital personnel, the police dep't., the fire dep't., and other individuals, to deliver basic emergency and non-emergency medical services to the general public.
Respond to calls from communications dispatcher, use appropriate radio communication skills, read GPS maps, drive the ambulance safely to and from the scene of injury or illness, use the most expeditious route, and observe traffic ordinances and regulation - with the goal to locate the patient needing EMS services in the shortest response time possible.
Assists in lifting, carrying, transporting patient to ambulance and on to a medical facility, reassuring patients and bystanders, avoiding mishandling patient and undue haste, and to provide additional emergency care following established protocols.
Follow established departmental policies, procedures and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards in the performance of duties.
Inspect and clean ambulance and equipments; to review and restock all medical equipment to ensure their completeness and operational readiness at all times, in consultation and collaboration with field supervisor, and in compliance with safety and infection control regulations and standards.
Conducts scene size-up.
Conduct primary and secondary patient examinations.
Take and record vital signs.
Utilize non-invasive diagnostic devices. Properly use of oropharyngeal & nasopharyngeal airway devices.
Open and maintain airway by positioning the patient's head.
Provide CPR & rescue breathing for infant, children, and adults.
Provide care for soft tissue injuries and control bleeding through direct pressure.
Provide care for suspected fractures.
Immobilization using spinal board, cervical collar, and splints.
Assist with pre-hospital childbirth.
Calm down the victim’s family members.
Ventilate with a non-invasive positive pressure delivery device.
Provide care for suspected shock, including the use of pneumatic anti-shock garment.
Obtain capillary blood specimen for blood glucose monitoring.
Administer epinephrine by subcutaneous injection or automatic injection device for anaphylaxis.
Administer aspirin for suspected myocardial infarction.
Operate bag valve mask device with reservoir.
Perform cardiac defibrillation with an automatic external defibrillator.
Perform tracheobronchial tube suctioning on endotracheal intubated patient.
Understands the use of body substance isolation.
Understands basic medical-legal principles.
Functions within only the scope of care as defined by state, region and local regulatory agencies.
Complies with regulations on the handling of the deceased, notifies authorities and arranges for protection of property and evidence at the scene.
Determine that the vehicle is in proper mechanical condition.
Maintains familiarity with specialized equipment used by service.
Attends continuing education and refresher training programs.
Complete a clear and accurate pre-hospital emergency care report from all patient contacts and provide copy of the report to the senior EMT.
