Emergency Department Technician

Under the supervision of a registered nurse, responsible for providing support to nursing staff and assisting in the delivery of patient care following hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and standards of care. 

Provides routine patient care services such as call light response; ambulating, transferring, and positioning; personal hygiene assistance.  Collects, records, and reports various patient data. Obtains vital signs, blood glucose levels, bedside pregnancy testing, and reports changes in patient data to registered nurse.  Obtains blood specimens by venipuncture or micro collection techniques, and assists nursing staff in collecting specimens from intra-vessel catheters.
Required:  High school graduate or equivalent.  Specialized education requirements include both:  Acute care nursing assistant course preferred for acute care positions or long term care nursing assistant course or completion of a clinical rotation while participating in an accredited nursing program or completion of medical training in a branch or the armed services Completion of course with externship in phlebotomy or completion of an emergency medical technician program or completion of medical assistant program.  Recent patient care experience in acute care setting as nursing or medical assistant, EMT, or completion of a clinical rotation in an accredited nursing program.  BLS certification Preferred: Emergency Department experience.
