Electrician
Job Description:The Electrician with IFAS Facilities Planning and Operations provides preventive maintenance and general maintenance for all UF/IFAS-owned buildings at Balm, Lake Alfred, Apopka, and Wimauma, Florida. Primary work location will be in Balm.
Duties will include:
Inspect & Maintain UF/IFAS Facilities – Conduct routine inspections, maintenance, and preventive maintenance on electrical systems within all UF/IFAS-owned buildings at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center (GCREC) in Balm, Florida. This includes troubleshooting and repairing motors, building wiring, and electrical equipment to ensure continuous operation. Travel to additional job sites may be required, with the use of a state vehicle for transportation.
Electrical Repairs – Perform electrical repairs on various systems, including HVAC components, control panels, and wiring to ensure proper climate control and energy efficiency within UF/IFAS facilities. Assist with diagnosing electrical issues related to heating, cooling, and ventilation systems.
Code-Compliant Installations – Install electrical systems for renovation and new construction projects, ensuring all work meets National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements and UF safety standards.
Contractor Coordination & Oversight – Obtain quotes from contractors for electrical work and provide oversight of their installations from start to finish, ensuring compliance with project specifications and safety regulations.
Fire Alarm System Maintenance – Test, repair, and replace fire alarm control panels and devices as needed to maintain campus safety and compliance with fire safety regulations.
Greenhouse Electrical Systems Support – Work closely with the greenhouse crew to provide hands-on training on electrical systems, ensuring they understand proper operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical components within greenhouse facilities.
Other Duties as Assigned – Assist with additional electrical and maintenance tasks as required to support the overall operations of UF/IFAS facilities.

Expected Salary:$22-26 hourly, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Minimum Requirements:Completion of an approved electrician apprenticeship program, or a high school diploma (or equivalent) and three (3) years of appropriate experience.
Appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications:Knowledge in installation and repair of electrical systems, pneumatic systems, mechanical systems.
Skilled in repair and installation of control circuit systems.
Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
Ability to use hand and power tools.
Ability to follow instructions.
Computer skills, including ability to learn and independently utilize electronic work order system.
Strong communication skills.
Self-starting work ethic.
City / county journeyman electrician’s license

Must hold and maintain valid EPA Universal Refrigerant Recovery certification.
