Electrical Engineer III - Energy Storage

The Staff Electrical Engineer – Energy Storage is responsible for integrating components and controls to drive C&I energy storage system design. This role provides electrical system engineering expertise to battery energy storage systems (BESS) product development projects by interfacing with the cross functional team including Engineering, Product Management, Manufacturing, and Strategic Global Sourcing.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline

7+ years of relevant work experience


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Product design experience in electrical systems integration and manufacturing support (design for manufacturing)

Hands on involvement with troubleshooting, testing, and validating AC/DC electrical systems

Background with battery energy storage systems, microgrids, distributed energy resources, power conversion systems, low or medium voltage electrical distribution

Preferred Qualifications:

Professional Engineering Designation (P.Eng.)

Experience in one or more of the following Energy Storage System technologies such as AC or DC coupled systems, batteries, battery management systems, power conversion systems such as inverters or converters, PV, fire suppression systems, thermal management systems and firmware

Advanced knowledge of control methods, energy management systems, and battery management systems

Ability to integrate system controls using Modbus (TCP/IP or RTU), CAN bus, or other communication protocols to varied PLC platforms

Familiarity with regulatory compliance such as: UL 1741, UL 9540 -A, NFPA 855, NFPA 70, DER interconnect standards, and generally with UL, NFPA, CSA, FCC, and IEC standards governing energy storage systems

Advanced ability to use DFMEA risk assessment tools

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Design, validate, and contribute to new energy storage system product design and development through electrical component integration and system operation

Apply power and control integration knowledge to create design documentation

Lead design reviews

Define system test plans and reliability requirements

Develop and execute system sequence of operations to enable energy system systems use cases such as demand response, on and off-grid reliability, renewable energy optimization, frequency regulation, energy arbitrage, distributed energy resource optimization, etc.

Specifies product functional requirements; designs, tests and integrates a variety of moderately complex components to produce final designs; and evaluates the design's overall effectiveness, cost (including cost/benefit analysis), reliability (risk analysis), and functional safety

Designs, develops, executes, and evaluates fitness-for-use testing, product specifications and process validation plans for a variety of moderately complex products and/or components; creates and reviews material part specifications and bills of materials.

Collaborates with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers, and product specialists to optimize moderately complex designs for manufacturability.

Create high level electrical drawings and model designs, then collaborate with others to complete detailed drawings utilizing CAD (Computer Aided Design) such as AutoCAD or Creo

Supports product development plans through the schedule, product cost, and meeting design inputs

Translates technical information to varied audiences through written communication and presentation skills

Acts as a resource to mentor and teach less experienced engineers

Travels to other Generac facilities as necessary

Compensation: Generac is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role when based in Cambridge, Ontario is $105,300.00 - $158,000.00 CAD Annual . This compensation will ultimately be in line with the location in which the position is filled. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate’s relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location. This role is eligible for variable compensation including short- and long-term incentives. Hybrid work environment is supported.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk.  On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 - 50 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
