With general supervision, perform electrical engineering functions requiring knowledge and experience in engineering principles. Responsible for the design of a complete project of moderately complex scope within an assigned practice area. Prepare a variety of moderately complex engineering deliverables. Perform moderately complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection. Prepare moderately complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles. Understand and adhere to assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Plan and conduct independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Responsible for leading smaller production teams, performing peer check designs of other peer engineers/ junior engineers/junior designers. Consistently and independently apply knowledge and comply with Black and Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks. Responsible for ensuring compliance with Black and Veatch quality program while performing internal Quality Assurance technical reviews. Review engineering design from subcontract engineering firms/drafters/junior engineers. Perform distribution design, including physical design with an emphasis on continuous improvement. Perform underground transmission design, including routing, cable sizing/specifications with an emphasis on continuous improvement. Develop quality processes for new clients and projects. Support continuous improvement and change management efforts. Remain current and apply independent knowledge and interpretation about departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black and Veatch policies and procedures relative to assigned tasks. Support construction crews with engineering questions in the field. Support real estate and permitting departments by gathering engineering and design data. Responsible to lead other engineers and interface directly with clients. Responsible for the overall execution and quality of projects as a leader within a team environment. Work directly with clients, vendors and subcontractors to understand client interests and drivers through normal client contact and through interaction and communication with project leadership. Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on less complex projects. No hire/fire authority. Related experience must include: electrical engineering experience with electrical distribution planning and underground transmission routing designs; 4/12/21/34 KV Overhead and underground distribution designing; 69/115/138/230/320/345/500kV underground transmission designs; review experience in diverse environments, including urban and rural settings; Fuse/protection coordination studies; cable ampacity studies; pulling calculations; material section for distribution and underground transmission designs; Understanding and using the following utility standards for designs NEC, NESC, OSHA, IEEE, IEC, AEIC, and ICEA; supporting field/construction team with project questions; right of way, easement, permit application and approval experience; and working with direct utility, commercial, and residential customers regarding primary or secondary power designs. Cost estimates for proposals – includes engineering deliverables, quantities, and schedules. Experience creating bill of materials for procurement and construction. Software experience required with the following tools: CYME, Poleforeman, EDGIS/TED, O-Calc, Pull Planner, Joint Pole Authorization, SAP and AutoCAD. National travel required up to 10%. Telecommuting is permitted within a reasonable commuting distance from the employer’s Overland Park, KS office. Must have good written and verbal communications skills in English.
