Educator-Clinical* Behavioral Medicine Center

Job Summary: The Educator-Clinical, conveys basic through advanced knowledge in field of expertise and conducts well planned, organized and relevant competency-based unit/department orientation and education programs for new and existing staff based on individualized learning needs and unit/department-specific functions and patient population served. Applies principles of adult learning to education processes and modifies as needed to accommodate for generational differences. Works side-by-side with staff to effectively train and assess staff's progress towards established learning outcomes and level of performance. Provides real-time feedback to staff and demonstrates the ability to turn successes and failures into meaningful "training moments."  Exhibits energetic and engaging team building education methods that produce a high performance team that adopts a care delivery model of accountability, empowerment and transformation of care to evidenced-based practice. Embraces new nursing staff hires and facilitates a smooth transition into the department workforce and practice setting. Collaborates with Staff Development colleagues and other clinical educators to strategically plan educational programs based on needs assessments, minimize duplication of efforts and ensure standardization of educational material and processes. Serves as a clinical resource, mentor and preceptor for staff and influences the workforce to achieve a high level of performance reflecting the nursing strategic plan, vision and values of the organization. Sets the stage for nursing-wide transition to high reliability patient outcomes.  Supports and inspires professional governance groups to attain required nursing excellence standards to maintain Magnet Recognition as outlined by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Presents lectures associated with clinical specialty for programs coordinated by Staff Development. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing required. Master of Science Degree in Nursing preferred. Three years clinical nursing experience in primary area of specialty required.

Knowledge and Skills: Substantial knowledge of clinical practice specialty, nursing scope of practice, adult learning principles, medical staff structure, legal aspects of care and evidenced-based clinical practice standards required. Understands state and federal healthcare regulations and accreditation, quality, patient safety, performance improvement methodologies, data management and statistical analysis required. Demonstrates professional competency and ability to develop and champion clinical outcome improvements in a multi-initiative organization with competing priorities. Must be able to work effectively with physician, nursing, administrative and ancillary staff. Obtains cooperation and support from a broad range of licensed and unlicensed staff. Able to: read; write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English (and Spanish preferred) in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.

Licensures and Certifications: Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Basic Life Support Certification through the American Heart Association required.  Other certifications and competencies as required in the unit/department-specific Plan for Providing Care required. National Certification in area of specialty preferred.
