Position Description\: 
As multi-disciplined machining technician the selected candidate will perform machining support of X-ray telescope manufacturing within the Optical Systems Design and Fabrication branch at NASA MSFC. This position supports the Optical Systems Design and Fabrication branch at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in the fabrication of normal incidence and grazing incidence mirrors for astrophysical telescopes operating in the infra-red through X-ray spectrum. The selected candidate will be an integral member of a diverse team of technicians, engineers and scientists that engage in the development of mirror systems and flight hardware. The selected candidate will\: support the development and execution of manufacturing processes for normal incidence and grazing incidence mirrors. Perform the setup of machines and the fabrication of high precision optical components, provide recommendations and input, based on fabrication capabilities and best practices. Interpret customer specifications and requirements and collect and document necessary information and data generated during the fabrication process, work with team members to tackle tough engineering challenges.

Duties\:

Manufacturing mechanical components for precision optics.
Machining supporting hardware utilizing both CNC and manual machining methods.
Tooling/Manufacturing design in a CAD environment.
Reviewing mechanical drawings to ensure manufacturability.
Identifying and implementing corrections to potential job safety hazards.
Operating overhead bridge hoists to move and assemble hardware.
Able to be flexible in an environment with fast changing priorities.

Qualifications\:

Educational requirements\: a High School diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or equivalent and at least 10 years of experience and continuing education, or an Associate's Degree or equivalent and at least 6 years of experience is required. 

The candidate is also required to have\:

CNC experience, especially in CNC mills and lathes. 
Experience in Programming, Setup and operation of Electrical Discharge Machine (Sodick Wire and Plunge EDMs).
Experience in manual machining such as lathes, mills, presses, etc.
Ability to fully read and understand mechanical drawings
Ability to complete required personnel safety training and certifications
An extremely strong safety attitude and commitment to safety
Excellent attention to detail, communication, and interaction skills
Computer acumen with MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint
CAD/CAM experience including solid model
Ability to read and write NC code
Ability to work independently with minimal oversight

Desired\:

Mechanical design, especially in Inventor, Creo or NX or a related product
Optical Fabrication
GD&T experience highly desirable.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

Physical Requirements\: Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and other facilities (10%).

Work Environment\:  Machine shop environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%).
Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%). 

Equipment and Machines\:  Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%). Requires the ability to operate materials test equipment (50%).

Attendance\:  Normal workday is from 6\:00 a.m. through 4\:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday. Overtime during the week and weekends may be required to meet schedules (50% max). Attendance and being prompt is important to provide continuous service to the customer; adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences is required. Regular attendance and punctuality are mandatory for meetings and other planned occasions. (100%).
