Director of Recreation

The Director of Recreation is responsible for planning, organizing, developing, directing, and carrying out with their staff and/or volunteers, an on-going schedule of meaningful recreational activities designed to meet the physical, mental, cultural, spiritual, emotional, and psychosocial interests of each resident in accordance with company policies and procedure as well as local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations. 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

Recruit, hire, oversee, direct, and supervise the work of, and evaluate the performance of all 

recreational / activity staff. 

Trains and develops subordinates to prepare them for promotion and increased responsibility.

Meets with activities staff on a regular basis to develop, conduct, and evaluate activities. 

Establish an active volunteer program which includes recruiting, screening, orienting, training, and 

supervising volunteers. 

Conducts, attends, and participates in new hire orientation, training, in-service educations, and staff 

meetings. 

Identifies developmental needs and provides and implements developmental plans for staff. 

Serves as liaison for the center in promoting positive community support and develops methods of 

utilizing community resources to enhance program opportunities. 

Ensure all mandatory training is completed on time. 

Coordinates with the Administrator to arrange for appropriate coverage during periods of absence. 

Maintains an organized, clean, and safe work area, including activity rooms and common areas. 

Manages time, projects, and records effectively. 

Attend and actively participate in monthly meetings and other meetings as requested. 

Routinely evaluates the department’s services as part of the center’s Quality Assurance and Process 

Improvement (QAPI) program; resolves all issues pertaining to the QAPI process. 

Maintains a departmental MSDS notebook. 

Conduct time studies when requested.

Complete continuing education as may be required by state law to maintain certification as a 

therapeutic recreation specialist or activities professional. 

Reports all instances of suspected abuse or neglect or other concerns to appropriate parties.

Recognize abnormal signs and symptoms, which may signify a physical change in any resident’s 

condition that could require nursing intervention; report the same to charge nurse immediately. 

Maintain confidentiality of all resident information. 

Performs other duties as necessary for the successful operation of the healthcare center.

 

PREREQUISITES, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Bachelor’s Degree and qualification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or activities professional; or, 

Associate Degree and qualified as a therapeutic recreation specialist or activities professional via (1) 

two years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last five years, one of which was 

full-time in a therapeutic activities program, (2) certification by the National Council of Activity 

Professionals or other recognized accrediting body, (3) completion of a state-approved activities 

training course, or (4) current licensure as an Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapist 

Assistant. 

Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to effectively interact with diverse group of individuals. 

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in-writing. 

Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. 

Ability to accept and exhibit the responsibility to make sound management decisions. 

Basic computer skills.
