Director of Finance
The University of Virginia seeks candidates for a Director of Finance for a newly established Institute in national security and intelligence. As the finance leader for the organization, this position assumes responsibility and oversight for strategic budget and financial forecasting, planning, reporting, and spend management. This role reports to and works with the Institute Executive Director, with heavy coordination with the Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy, the School of Data Science, the Biocomplexity Institute, the Office of Sponsored Programs, and the Office of the Provost.

Responsibilities include:

Develop and submit annual unit budget to the Office of the Provost and government sponsorDevelop and update a multi-year financial plan in AdaptiveWork with program directors, principal investigators, and the University’s Office of Sponsored Programs to submit proposals through ResearchUVA Powered by Huron and ensure labor distribution is properly calculatedComplete quarterly financial reports in a timely mannerAttend University-wide fiscal manager meetings and report to the Directors and other effected parties on important developmentsMonitor allocations of funds and gifts, grants, awards, and subventions from federal agencies, private foundations, and other entitiesManage accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, and payroll transactionsMaintain internal controls to assure adherence to current accounting and GAAP standards and university fiscal policies and proceduresIdentify and execute efficient workflow and process improvement initiatives to ensure proper financial management and documentationReview contracts prior to submission to the Office of ProcurementManage the purchase order process for services and goods including consultants and subject matter expertsManage any external audit processServe as a member of leadership advisory team providing consultation to the DirectorIn addition to the above responsibilities, other duties may be assigned

The Institute offers a flexible working environment. A remote schedule is negotiable. In-person presence will be required at meetings throughout the year.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

US Citizenship.Education: Bachelor's degree in relevant subject.Experience: At least seven years of experience in a financial discipline, likely with supervisory experience. 11 years of relevant/finance experience accepted in lieu of degree.Licensure: May hold CPA or other advanced financial certification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in university budget administration and grants accounting.Experience in federal contract fiscal management including compliance.Demonstrated ability to manage deadlines and working timetables.Specific experience with WorkDay for finance.Experience working with Federal fiscal regulations.Possess or be eligible to be granted US government security clearance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.

POSITION DETAILS

The anticipated start date is September 15, 2024, and this position will remain open until filled. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. This is an exempt level, benefited position.
