Director of Development - Billings Clinic Foundation
The Director of Development plays a pivotal role in advancing philanthropic support for the Billings Clinic Foundation. Working closely with the Foundation President, the Director is responsible for driving sustainable growth in giving by managing donor stewardship, planned giving, and major gift programs. The position requires strategic oversight to ensure these programs are executed consistently, comprehensively, and with precision.

This role involves cultivating strong relationships with prospective and current donors, along with their financial and legal advisors, to foster long-term engagement and giving. The Director is accountable for the effective balance and management of various fundraising efforts, including annual giving, special events, grateful patient campaigns, planned giving, major gifts, and capital/endowment campaigns. A deep understanding of the fundraising landscape and specialized tools, particularly in planned giving, is essential. The Director also collaborates with key stakeholders, including the Foundation President, CEO, physicians, board members, and external professionals, to facilitate major gift requests and align short- and long-term goals with the organization’s mission.
Essential Job Functions
• Collaborates with the Foundation President to lead the fundraising team in developing, refining, and enhancing fundraising programs that increase success and encourage giving.
• Acts as a recognized expert in fundraising and planned giving within the Foundation and the broader community.
• Supports the Foundation staff in program development, marketing, and setting fundraising priorities. Ensures continuity and synergy between Foundation goals and fundraising efforts while assisting in problem resolution.
• Aids in the creation and execution of the Foundation's operating plan, including short- and long-term planning, budgeting, and fundraising campaigns.
• Promotes an environment of open communication and teamwork, fostering a shared commitment to the Foundation's goals and ensuring quality and cost-effective outcomes.
• Assists in the evaluation, selection, and integration of fundraising technology, fund management systems, and prospect development protocols to optimize fundraising efforts and resource efficiency.
• Works with Foundation staff to expand fundraising activities and build relationships with current and prospective donors.
• Leads the execution of the Foundation’s planned giving program in collaboration with the Foundation President and staff.
• Identifies and engages new planned giving prospects while working with existing donors to further develop relationships.
• Organizes and promotes the Foundation’s program for receiving gifts of property, stocks, charitable remainder trusts, uni-trusts, charitable gift annuities, etc.
• Works with legal counsel to structure viable gifts and coordinates estate distributions. Expands relationships with legal, accounting, and financial professionals to enhance the planned giving program.
• Assists in individual donor giving programs, direct mail campaigns, memorial/tribute efforts, events, and corporate, major, and capital gift programs.
• Ensures timely and consistent donor communications, and develops materials to support development efforts. Ensures all Foundation correspondence and publications are accurate, well-written, and legally sound.
• Assists in acquiring Classic sponsorships, including major sponsorships and Friends table contributors. Develops and implements a comprehensive donor/sponsor stewardship plan for all Classic events.
• Represents Billings Clinic in appropriate governmental affairs and philanthropy-focused committees.
• Serves as a regional resource for Billings Clinic affiliates regarding fundraising.
• Develops planned giving marketing and promotional materials to raise awareness and engagement.
• Mange portfolio of Physician Alumni to include delivery on three organized gatherings and other communications as necessary.
• Utilizes performance improvement principles to assess and enhance the quality of fundraising efforts and related processes.
• Identifies personal growth and development needs, setting goals for continuous improvement, and ensures the achievement of all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.
• Maintains competency in all relevant organizational, departmental, and external safety standards to support professional and operational excellence.
