The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the center of a world-class liberal arts research and teaching at Stanford University. The largest school encompassing the humanities, arts, social sciences, and natural sciences, H&S has 24 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs, and it is the university's home for fundamental and applied research. In addition, the school is the locus of several collaborative university-wide initiatives. The H&S External Relations team is fully integrated into Stanford Office of Development and is focused on taking a donor-centered approach to raising gifts in support of core school priorities. **Position Summary:** H&S is seeking an experienced candidate to join their development team as the Director of Development. Reporting to the Associate Dean for External Relations, the Director of Development will help lead development efforts and execution of campaign activities and fundraising goals for the school. The Director of Development will oversee major gifts, annual and leadership giving and the administration and operations. As a senior member of the External Relations team, the Director of Development will also be responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors at the major and principal gifts levels. In coordination with the Associate Dean, the Director of Development will manage planning and implementation of fundraising strategies for the school, while also handling their own portfolio. The successful candidate will operate independently and take responsibility for the team’s prospect identification and solicitation, proposal development, and coordination of internal support activities. The candidate will also work with staff, donors, volunteers, faculty, and other university staff to assist in establishing and maintaining relationships with all university constituencies. **In this role you will:** + Direct the efforts of major gifts, annual and leadership giving and administration and operations for H&S. + Personally manage a portfolio of high potential individual prospects through the discovery, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship cycles. Forge long-term relationships with these individuals to cultivate their interest in Stanford that will lead to gifts in the seven- and eight-figure range. + Oversee planning and implementation of specific fundraising major gifts and annual and leadership giving programs. + Work with volunteers and faculty to develop goals and fundraising activities. + Provide opportunities for professional growth focusing on retention to increase capacity and stability of the team. + Inspire and motivate staff by fostering a work environment that encourages new ideas, risk-taking, team-based efforts, celebrating current achievements and setting/meeting philanthropic goals. + Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees. + Ensure appropriate resources are allocated towards programs, resolve internal allocation issues. + Demonstrate a commitment to promoting and supporting an environment of diversity and inclusion **To be successful in this role, you will bring:** **Education & Experience:** Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience and management experience, preferably in an educational institution or nonprofit or a combination of education and relevant experience. **Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:** + Demonstrated fundraising experience, sensitivity, and diplomacy. + Excellent judgment, interpersonal and communication skills.Ability to lead and motivate others and earn the respect of associates at all levels. + Strategic skills to craft and help implement fundraising plans. + Demonstrated managerial talent in guiding major gifts efforts. + Customer service expertise serving faculty. + Proven ability to meet fundraising goals with a strong track record in managing and balancing donor and faculty relationships. + Ability to manage a large number of fundraising activities simultaneously. + Solid verbal and written communication skills. + Effective management experience and excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated experience recruiting, evaluating, mentoring, and placing staff. + Demonstrated experience engaging and motivating groups of diverse individuals. **WORKING CONDITIONS:** + May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. The expected pay range for this position is $162,653 – $211,154 per annum. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
