Job Details:
Purpose: Serve in a key leadership role in the department of Recreational Sports, providing administrative oversight for the financial, Human Resources, Information Technology, contracts, and business operations of the department.
General Notes:
The Director of Business Services provides leadership and ensures the effective management of operational functions to support the strategic goals of Recreational Sports, ensuring compliance with university policies. This role includes overseeing financial planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and internal controls, while fostering a collaborative, service-oriented culture. As a senior leadership team member, the Director contributes to strategic decision-making and advises on financial matters and resource optimization. The Director must be able to manage complex operational challenges and maintain strong relationships across various university stakeholders. Must be eligible to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis without sponsorship.
Responsibilities:
Leadership of Business Services Unit, overseeing the administration of Financial, Human Resources, Information Technology, Contracts, and Business Services. Perform overall administration of financial, human resources, information technology, contracts and business office functions of Recreational Sports. Oversee asset management, internal control and audit systems for compliance with departmental and university policies, and implement changes as needed. Evaluate systems and processes for greatest effectiveness and efficiency as required. Serve as the departmental liaison regarding any audits.Financial Leadership and Budget Management. Financial oversight and administer the preparation of all departmental budget planning. Manage multiple auxiliary enterprise fund groups, including development of budget strategies, preparation for committee reviews, budget processing, departmental allocations, year-end projections and long-term forecasting. Give financial presentations to various groups. Develop and maintain expert knowledge of business operations for the department. Manage UBIT process and endowment/gift accounts for department. Monitor reserve and account balances and review reconciliation reports.Business Services Staff Management and Project Management. Manage the Business Services staff within Recreational Sports and indirectly supervise additional full-time and part-time staff in the area, fostering engagement, influence, and mentorship to ensure accountability and adherence to the highest standards. Provide skilled project management for complex projects that fall within areas of responsibility. Ensure that all projects meet deadlines, stay within budget, and align with department goals. Lead cross-functional teams and work closely with stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes.Senior Staff Leadership and Strategic Planning. Provide leadership as a Senior Staff member of Recreational Sports, working directly with the Executive Director and other senior staff members to establish strategic goals and make decisions. Apprise group of pertinent business and financial information, provide counsel, and be responsive to affiliated goals of professional staff members. Make recommendations to leadership to optimize the use of reserves. Represent the department at the Executive Director’s request by participating in on- and off-campus meetings. Work with other campus entities and departmental stakeholders as needed. Serve as the departmental liaison with UT Legal.University Liaison and External Communication. Serve as liaison with University and University Systems personnel relative to financial, budgetary, and business-related issues. Address inquiries and collaborate with university departments to resolve financial or operational concerns. Participate in university-wide meetings as required and represent the department’s interests.Special Projects, Research, and Other Duties. Conduct in-depth research and analysis on financial, organizational, and budget issues and initiatives to provide senior leadership with information and recommendations, as assigned. Respond to inquiries, surveys, or requests from other universities relative to financial, budgetary, HR, or business issues of the department. Serve as a contributing member of the staff. Serve on committees, and work on special projects. Other duties as assigned.Required Qualifications
Master’s degree is required. Five or more years of leadership experience. Proven ability in strategic thinking, sound judgment, and effective planning. Demonstrated commitment to working in and developing teams, with a strong record of fiscal responsibility. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with auxiliary unit budgets. Familiarity with UT Austin’s budget and business operations. Knowledge of university policies and financial systems is highly desirable, as well as experience with long-term financial planning and forecasting.

Working Conditions and Other Requirements:
Continuously maintain and adhere to the department's Vision, Mission and Values, Performance Standards and Communication Credo. Regular and punctual attendance in the workplace required, and work additional hours when required. Frequently work more than 40 hours per week, including weekends, evenings and holidays. This position is designated as an essential worker and may need to report to work, either in-person or remotely, after hours, during UT holidays or emergency closures, and/or while on leave (excluding Family Medical Leave unless permitted to work intermittently). Not all designated essential workers will be required to work during these times, but will work as assigned/required by the supervisor. Comply with departmental and university policies and procedures, and all other university and system rules and regulations. Security sensitive position. Position is a Campus Security Authority pursuant to the Clery Act and University policy, and a Responsible Employee pursuant to Title IX and University policy.
Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation, use of manual dexterity, climbing of stairs, lifting and moving, exposure to alarms, fumes, large crowds, microwave emissions, noise and windowless work area. May work around chemical fumes, and around standard office conditions. Occasional outdoor activity and exposure to all weather conditions.
Continuously work as a team member, independently, and work under stress. Maintain ability to interact cooperatively with staff and participants, communicate effectively both in written and verbal form, be flexible, be supervised, adhere to university policies and procedures, organize time and documents effectively, perform multiple tasks, function capably in a complex organizational structure with fast-paced working conditions. Ability to provide leadership, supervise others, and delegate tasks, make independent judgments, maintain confidentiality, maintain professional demeanor, and maintain knowledge required to perform professional duties. Occasional intrastate and interstate travel.
