The Department of Molecular Biosciences ( https://molecularbiosci.utexas.edu) brings together a talented group of faculty, students, postdocs and staff who work together on innovative research in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology and biophysics, cell and developmental biology, plant biology, microbiology, immunology and infectious diseases, biotechnology and systems biology. Our faculty and their teams not only make discoveries that change the world, they leverage these discoveries to integrate into state-of-the art courses and training experiences for undergraduate and graduate students as part of our core educational mission.
PurposeThe Director is a key member of the Molecular Biosciences leadership team, responsible for overseeing the administrative, financial and human resources functions, in addition to working closely with the department chair on developing and implementing strategies to meet the vision and mission of the department.
ResponsibilitiesManage all administrative operations for a large academic unit and research centers (18 staff). Seeks out opportunities for business process improvement while ensuring compliance to university policies. Provide a high level of support for faculty, staff, and students in the academic department.
Oversight of the department budget, including balance review reporting, endowment management, external review reporting, annual BUD submission, scholarship processing, and compliance for unit’s procard verification. Provide other reporting as necessary to endowed chairs.
Support the Department Chair with projects and strategic planning.
Oversee all aspects of tenure/tenure track faculty affairs management, including recruitment, faculty promotions and reviews, tracking appointments, activity reports, and summer support.
Serve as liaison between department and other UT offices. Coordinates and prepares various university reports as required.
Other duties and projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and eight years’ of progressively responsible experience with administrative and financial functions. Experience effectively managing and mentoring a large team. Demonstrated ability to operate creatively, collegially, and effectively in a complex academic and business environment across all levels. Ability to work independently with little supervision and as part of a team. Strong analytical skills, proficiency with Excel, and ability to quickly learn new systems/software. Experience in budgeting and forecasting, accounting and reporting, internal control and compliance, and human resources. Excellent written and oral communication. Experience interpreting and implementing policies and procedures. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred QualificationsExperience in a higher education institution. Demonstrated knowledge of policies and procedures, and business applications used at the University of Texas at Austin.
Salary Range$135,000 + depending on qualifications
