Director of Accountability

The University of Virginia Division of Student Affairs invites applications for an exciting opportunity within the Division – Director of Accountability. The University’s mission to develop engaged citizen-leaders is the foundation of the Division’s work, which is guided by six core values – academic rigor, diversity and inclusion, health and wellness, honor, public service, and student self-governance. The Division consists of over 200 employees within six units – the Office of the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer, the Office of the Dean of Students, Student Health and Wellness, the University Career Center, the Office of African American Affairs, and the Office of Policy, Accountability, and Critical Events (PACE) – all working together, for and alongside students, to create the distinctive student experience for which UVA is known. The Director of Accountability is a full time, salaried position reporting to the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs (for PACE).

Primary Responsibilities

The Director of Accountability supports the mission of the Student Affairs Division through supervision and management of the student accountability triage process and support for the Division’s response to emergencies and critical events. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs, the Director provides leadership for the Accountability branch of PACE including supervision of branch staff and oversight of branch processes and procedures.The Director manages the disciplinary case triage process including review of new cases and assigning cases among the PACE team (Accountability branch first and then broader PACE team). The position also maintains a sizeable case load including meeting with involved student(s) and determining appropriate next steps such as informal resolution or referral to the University Judiciary Committee (UJC) for formal adjudication.The Director manages PACE’s SafeGrounds (SGs) support and serves as liaison to the University’s SGs working group.The Director develops and implements best practice case management and workflow processes within the context of UVA’s system of student self-governance. While the Director does not advise the UJC (the AVP-PACE serves as the UJC’s advisor), the Director leads case management and workflow processes prior to any referral to the UJC.In appropriate cases, the position issues interim suspensions and will provide on-call support for after-hours suspensions.The Director provides leadership for hazing case response, including chairing the Hazing Evaluation Panel and serving as a senior hazing investigator. The position is responsible for recruiting and training hazing investigators from the Division.The Director represents PACE and the Division on various University committees and work groups.The Director supports critical incident/event planning and response. Responsibilities include deploying to incidents/events and engaging with involved parties (e.g., protestors/demonstrators), and serving as a back-up on the University’s Incident Assessment Group and Critical Incident Management Team. Work hours for the position are flexible given the need for regular after-hours and weekend responsibilities. The Director is a full-time salaried position reporting to the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs (PACE).

Job Duties:

70% - Accountability

Manage case triage process and assign cases among PACE team (Accountability branch first and then broader PACE team).Receive and review misconduct reports. Meet with involved student(s) and determine appropriate next steps including potential referral to the University Judiciary Committee. Part of the referral process will include determination of appropriate Standards of Conduct to charge, or policies implicated.Manage PACE’s SafeGrounds (SGs) support and serve as liaison to SGs working group.Develop and implement best practice case management and workflow processes within the context of UVA’s system of student self-governance.Issue interim suspensions in appropriate situations, including on-call support for after-hours interim suspensions.Review Requests for Hearing on CHI and determine outcome.Chair Hazing Evaluation Panel and coordinate investigations.Serve as a senior hazing investigator, including referral for disciplinary action (UJC or termination of operating agreement) in appropriate cases.Recruit and train hazing investigators from the Division.Serve as PACE representative on the Hoos Against Hazing Committee.Attend and participate in UJC trials as a complainant.Supervise Accountability staff including an associate director and assistant director.Represent PACE and the Division on various committees and work groups.Conduct data collection from University systems including SafeGrounds, SIS, and Presence for tracking and analysis. 

25% Critical Incidents and Events

Serve as on-site University official for student protests/demonstrations. Serve in rotation for Command Post deployments and coordination of emergency response (e.g., Wahoo Welcome, Convocation, Final Exercises, home football games, and other large-scale events at the University).Serve as back up on the University’s 24/7 Incident Assessment Group (IAG) for initial assessment and response to emergencies on Grounds.Serve on the University’s Critical Incident Management Team supporting preparation and response to institutional emergencies.

5% - Special Projects and Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum Requirements:

Candidates must have the following required knowledge areas, skills, and abilities: 

Master’s degree and at least 6 years of relevant experience in Higher Education, Student Affairs Administration, legal affairs, student conduct, or other related discipline. Additional experience can substitute for the Master’s requirement.Demonstrated commitment to student self-governance and ability to work closely with students as professional colleagues. Strong commitment to the division’s core values of academic rigor, diversity and inclusion, health and wellness, honor, public service, and student self-governance. Strong oral and written communication skills.

A competitive applicant for Director will have many of the following preferred knowledge areas, skills, and abilities: 

Ability to coordinate resources, evaluate information, and identify alternative solutions. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Understanding of the University's educational mission, strategic aims, and programs, including student culture and unique student self-governance model. Experience with student conduct investigations (e.g., hazing).Experience with emergency management and coordination of complex operational systems.Experience with assessment, data analysis, and data-driven decision-making. Ability to effectively adapt to changing circumstances and engage collaboratively with stakeholders at all levels both inside and outside the University.

Compensation and Benefits:

The hiring range for this position is $85,000 - $90,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check. This is an exempt-level position with UVa benefits. Employees’ benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands:

This position primarily involves regular office work and may require occasional travel to attend meetings, conferences, or events to support the mission and work of Student Affairs.
