Director & Counsel, Enterprise Platforms

The General Counsel’s Organization (“GCO”) at American Express is seeking a Director & Counsel to support Global Technology’s Enterprise Platforms (“EP”) organization. EP is a global Center of Excellence comprised of over 1,000 product and engineering professionals responsible for core platforms that power the company’s growth. The position will report to a Vice President & Senior Counsel within the GCO’s Global Technology, Cyber, Procurement and Real Estate practice group.
Role & Responsibilities:
Serve as lead lawyer on a wide range of technology agreements, including hosted services, software licensing, professional services, and outsourcing agreements Collaborate with ad hoc teams of internal lawyers to coordinate across related transactions, and ensuring the occurrence of robust knowledge sharing, linking of strategies and issues, and report outs and escalations to senior leadership Provide thought leadership around how we identify, assess, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks related to platform architecture, technology procurement, and vendor management Provide day-to-day legal counsel to engineers and product managers on matters relating to governance, compliance, and other frameworks applicable to technology transactions, third-party risk, and platforms Track industry, legal, and market developmentsMinimum Qualifications:
J.D. with ability to practice law in New York 8+ years of relevant work experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environment Deep experience drafting and negotiating bespoke, complex technology transactions with strategic vendors in the financial services space (e.g., IT, BPO, hosted services, software licensing, professional services, etc.) Demonstrated experience supporting technology teams with the effective and timely resolution of risk-related issues, including those identified by internal audit, regulatory reviews, or internal assessmentPreferred Qualifications:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Excellent drafting and negotiation skills Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively Demonstrated experience in gaining credibility, managing expectations, and developing strong working relationships with legal colleagues and clients Experience working with technology or financial services companies Independent, capable of handling multiple assignments simultaneouslySalary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
