About the Role: Grade Level (for internal use): 13 The Team: We are looking for an experienced professional to join our Financial Institutions Ratings team in Johannesburg as a Director/Lead Analyst. This role is part of the broader Financial Institutions & Sovereign team, which covers emerging and frontier markets across the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia. Our team consists of 20 analysts based in our Dubai, Johannesburg, London, and Frankfurt offices, fostering a diverse and collaborative work environment. The Impact: The role is critical to the success of our Financial Institutions ratings franchise in the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region which comprises a portfolio (Pod) of over 25 banks and diversified banking groups. What you stand to gain: As a Lead Analyst, you will be accountable for providing senior analytical oversight over ratings and research publications, alongside managing relationships with clients and external stakeholders. Additionally, mentoring and coaching less experienced members of your Pod will be key aspects of your role, fostering their professional growth and enhancing team capabilities. Responsibilities: Assume analytical oversight responsibility for a broad portfolio of credits, ensuring timely rating surveillance and high-quality publications. This includes taking ownership of complex analytical issues. Serve as a role model and actively supports primary analysts in the Pod with managing analytical relationships with issuers in the portfolio. Collaborates with the Sovereign team on analysis of broader systemic and financial stability risks. In coordination with the Analytical Manager and Sector Lead, develops and executes on our research and investor outreach plan. Mentors/coaches Pod members to further build capabilities across providing exceptional issuer service, sector analysis, emerging risks and other success factors relating to our analytical insights and market relevance. Acts as a primary analyst on up to 50% of a standard portfolio for an analyst. Contribute to analytical projects as needed, which may include leading projects related to Criteria, research, thought leadership pieces, and global initiatives (e.g., GIFTs/LIFTs). What We’re Looking For: An S&P Global employee at this level would typically have 10+ years' of analytical experience. A degree in a relevant economics or finance-related field is required; a relevant Master’s degree, CFA, or other financial qualifications are highly desirable. Proven expertise in the analysis of banks and financial services companies. Strong written and oral communication skills in English are essential.
