Director, Taxation

Role Impact:

To provide leadership to members of the tax group; to oversee and direct the group in the overall preparation and review of tax returns, tax projections and tax provisions to ensure accuracy, timely completion and compliance with tax laws, accounting standards and internal controls; to understand, maintain and advise on Canadian corporate tax structures and arrangements; to provide advice and oversee technical issues with respect to Canadian sales taxes; to research tax issues relating to specific transactions and ongoing operations to ensure compliance with tax laws, tax minimization and tax exemptions; to provide service to internal and external parties (including Legal, Investment, Operations, D&I, HR, Finance and Development groups up to the level of EVP) to allow efficient performance and communication in regard to tax matters.

 

What you will deliver:

Directs the timely and accurate review and completion of all tax returns, tax projections and tax provisions to ensure compliance with legislative requirements, internal control procedures, appropriate and consistent tax treatment of inclusions and deductions and completeness of transactions reported. Tax filing alternatives and tax risks should also be identified and appropriately documented. The review should also be undertaken with a view to identifying tax planning opportunities and process enhancements Provide advice and oversee Canadian technical issues with respect to Canadian sales taxes; Directs the timely payment and management of all corporate tax instalments Understand, manage, maintain, and advise on Canadian corporate tax structures and operational arrangements, which includes providing direction and approval of cash movements between entities Oversee and direct the ongoing learning/training initiatives of the tax group such as monthly technical sessions for the tax group, lunch and learn sessions for the tax group and/or other groups within Cadillac Fairview Directs the management of income and sales tax audits by governmental authorities By applying management and leadership skills through the use of coaching, feedback and status meetings, objective setting sessions, performance appraisals and the assignment of development projects, this position will be responsible for: All activities of the direct and indirect reports to ensure the timely achievement of department goals, within prescribed policies, procedures, and standard business practices The oversight of overall delegation of work within the department and the optimal utilization of resources and to provide opportunities for group members to grow professionally, promoting ownership and accountability for delegated assignments/projects; and Ensuring that regular motivation, coaching and mentoring to all staff is provided to encourage on-going professional development for succession planning and career progression purposes.

What you need to succeed:

University Degree - Business related major Completion of CPA In-depth Tax Course or equivalent Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in corporate income tax which will include both tax planning and tax provision experience, with at least 3 years in a people leadership role Exposure to Real Estate/Property Management business an asset Exposure to Pension Benefits Act would be beneficial

Solid knowledge of the following:

Income and commodity tax law and administration (Canadian) Theory behind Statutes and interpretation Financial accounting principles and practices Company and industry operations Pension Benefits Standards Act (to be developed)

Computer literate and proficient in:

Microsoft Office Tax preparation packages Tax research software
