The Public Health Sciences Department at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Director, Research Support.

SUMMARY

The Director, Research Support oversees research and grant activities within the department with the goals of maintaining financial solvency and academic growth. Moreover, an employee in this position serves as a mentor to department management and staff on issues of research funding

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                                                                  

Develops reports summarizing research activity within the department on a regular basis. Maintains current knowledge of institutional and external policies and procedures to ensure compliance.

Serves as liaison to federal agencies and other funding sources.

Creates reports detailing grant spending and ensures that investigators are appropriately using funding. Oversees research initiatives and database personnel.

Monitors projects to ensure positive project evaluations, future sustainability, and benefits. Reviews monthly institutional reports of research accounts and works with investigators to resolve discrepancies.

Screens department budget, assists in the assignment of expenditures, and identifies areas of opportunity for cost-saving.

Participates in various University research councils, committees, and research organizations.

Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. 

Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

DEPARTMENT-SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                             

Support development of grants, including drafting or editing sections and budget development

Develop study protocols and manuals of operating procedures in collaboration with investigators, clinicians, and research staff

Develop timelines and monitor milestones across all phases and components of research projects and grant submissions

Lead or support various research teams across projects, including data management and statistical team, intervention development and implementation team, quality assurance monitoring team, cost analysis team, etc.

Work closely with data management team to develop study instruments, program them into the EDC system and test them prior to study launch.

Serves as liaison to federal agencies and other sponsors in terms of programmatic and administrative issues.

Create weekly/monthly reports for study investigators and interim and annual reports for sponsors

Oversee all regulatory matters for research projects and consult with investigators, as needed, including preparation and submission of IRB protocols and research documents, safety reporting, develop and maintain regulatory binder, etc.

Work closely with department-specific administrators to submit grants, develop and monitor budgets, and order equipment and supplies.

Work across university departments and multiple institutions to plan and execute all research project deliverables as outlined in grants/study protocols. Lead in-person and virtual trainings for research personnel and clinicians, and provide retraining, as needed based on need

Responsible for building and managing relationships with research/clinical sites, including ongoing engagement with site leadership, clinicians, and staff, identify local “champion” to support the implementation of research studies on-site, and address other administrative and programmatic matters to ensure successful implementation of projects at each site.

Provide support to study sites in terms of study implementation and logistics, participant recruitment and retention strategies, regulatory matters, etc. Provide support in all research dissemination activities, including research presentations, abstracts, and publications

Recruit, manage and train research personnel.

Oversee remote research personnel in terms of study implementation, research logistics, scheduling study visits, participant recruitment and retention, local data collection and management, study close-out, etc.

Participate in various University research councils, committees, and research organizations.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                                                                

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Knowledge of business and management principles.

Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.

Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.

Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.

DEPARTMENT-SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Master’s Degree in Public Health, Psychology, Social Work, or another related field preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 7 years of experience in clinical research/project management

Minimum 3 years of experience working in or implementing health or research initiatives in clinical settings

Minimum 2 years of experience supervising local and report projects and personnel

Experience working with diverse populations, including medically underserved individuals, sexual and gender minorities, or racial and ethnic minorities is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Knowledge of principles of clinical research, human subject protection and good clinical practice

Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate research operations at local and remote sites

Ability to develop goals/objectives for research projects, develop timelines and monitor milestones, and provide reports to research personnel

Ability to lead or support various teams across multiple institutions

Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others, both locally and remotely

Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others, including research staff, research administrators and clinicians.
