Director, Field Engineering

Who we are
We're Redis. We built the product that runs the fast apps our world runs on. (If you checked the weather, used your credit card, or looked at your flight status online today, you’re welcome.) At Redis, you’ll work with the fastest, simplest technology in the business—whether you’re building it, telling its story, or selling it to our 10,000+ worldwide customers. We’re creating a faster world with simpler experiences. You in?

Why would you love this job?

The Redis Field Engineering team develops and supports tools, libraries, and integrations that help our customers succeed with Redis. The team’s work is driven by near-term customer priorities at both the pre-sales and renewal stages. The scope of projects ranges from observability (e.g., Grafana) to data access (e.g., the Redis OM libraries). This agile team effectively operates at the intersection of our product, solutions engineering, and customer success teams.

As the technical leader for Field Engineering, you'll have the opportunity to lead a team of talented, customer-facing software engineers with broad expertise in databases. As a player-coach, you'll guide these engineers in delivering elegant, maintainable tools, libraries, and integrations that delight our customers. A large part of our mandate is in helping to build a superior developer experience for Redis. This means that, in addition to delivering functional code, we also place great emphasis on ergonomics, documentation, and internal and external enablement materials.

To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to model the wide variety of skills that our field engineers exercise on a daily basis. This starts with a strong foundation in software engineering. Beyond that, you'll need the ability to work with customers, help with the occasional support ticket, and demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills. You'll also need to build productive relationships with internal teams such as our product managers, core engineers, and solutions architects.

This is an exciting role for any engineering manager who enjoys leading a variety of projects in a multi-disciplinary fashion and who excels at working with customers directly. If this sounds intriguing, we would love to hear from you.

What you’ll do:

Lead our Field Engineering team and manage the team's projects, from development through maintenance Guide the team's roadmap and priorities by developing a deep understanding of our products, customers, and the needs of our technical field teams Develop and support our existing team members with empathy Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to ensure that our field solutions are known to our customers and integrated into our sales processes Work with our product and engineering organizations to ensure alignment between Field Engineering projects and our core product offerings Evaluate the effectiveness of the solutions delivered by the team by gathering data and qualitative feedback directly from our customers as well as from our technical field teams Attract and hire talented engineers who can make a significant positive impact on the team

What will you need to have?

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, or equivalent experience Excellent verbal and written communication skills At least five years of software engineering experience At least three years of experience managing a technical team, including: Strong leadership and management skills Experience with short- and long-term planning Ability to run a software engineering project from ideation to maintenance Ability to mentor experienced engineers Strong technical background with expertise in at least one programming language Understanding and experience with deploying, operating, and troubleshooting software in production Strong working knowledge in Linux and modern software development tooling Willingness to help support customers outside of normal working hours, on occasion

Extra great if you have:
