Director, Academic Advising

GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Director of Advising is a key member of the management team in the Ainslie Office of Student Engagement. The Director of Advising has primary responsibility for overseeing the academic progress and success of approximately 720 students in the full time MBA and MS graduate programs, in addition to approx. 380 students on internship track so close to 1,000 students per year. This individual directly supervises four dedicated academic advisors who meet individually with students on academic and other issues such as personal, team, crisis related etc. that could impede academic performance. This position also includes school wide responsibility on behalf of Simon for ISO (international student organization) issues.
**JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**
**Program Management, Advising and Academic** **Support (60%)**
+ Oversees advising function for full-time and part-time graduate programs and certificates at Simon, including collaborating on new program and certificate launches.
+ Direct supervision of 4 - 5 academic advisors handling issues related to academics, personal and crisis management, team conflict resolution and student success. Supervision includes annual reviews, training, support and career development for advising team.
+ Individual/direct student advising where necessary or in challenging student situations.
+ Oversight of student internship track communications covering final academic requirements, health insurance, end-of program surveys etc. Coordinates with other Simon offices to provide information.
+ Active participant in faculty committee meetings, student leadership meetings, academic standards committee meetings, and interdepartmental working group meetings to share knowledge and insights on student success systems to manage and improve student satisfaction, retention, and graduation rates.
+ Proactive management of the advising calendar to ensure timely engagement with “at-risk” students.
+ Responsible for faculty support and communication regarding needs and timelines for each degree program. Provides advice and counsel as needed to faculty directors on student issues.
+ Manages monthly reporting of student advising, student status and progress on degree requirements, including any exception processing and management.
+ Direct handling of student concerns and elevating of significant or program level concerns
+ Responsible for development and dissemination of student communications related to program of study, student leadership, program requirements, etc.
+ Partners with Student Life team to plan and execute regular program seminars, lunches, and celebration events related to each program of study.
+ Participates in annual assurance of learning and continuous improvement process for programs.
+ Coordinates yearly review and updating of student handbook including all policies and procedures.
+ Serves on Simon Academic Operations Leadership Team.
+ Partners with Admissions to deliver academic related content on Admissions webinars and during Admitted Student weekends. Monitors WeChat channels.
+ Develops and delivers academic and team related content during orientations for both MBA and MS.
+ Meets regularly with MBA and MS student leaders (VP Academics roles) for feedback on issues.
**School-wide Student** **Support:** **ISO Designee for Simon Business School** **(10%)**
+ Plans and oversees mandatory meetings for all internship track students
+ Provides oversight of CPT and OPT counseling and corresponding paperwork and tracking
+ Ensures proper paperwork is provided to ISO for internship students in final term
+ Works closely with ISO staff regarding students with complex or imminent immigration issues
**Academic Integrity Committee Liaison (10%)**
+ Provide process guidance to faculty experiencing potential academic integrity concerns
+ Act as academic integrity committee liaison for academic integrity complaints and supporting the Academic Integrity Committee Chair in such matters
+ Support and advise student regarding hearing notification and preparation
+ Manage confidential academic integrity hearing data and data destruction process
+ Participate in review of academic integrity process, providing data in confidential matter for reporting and continuous improvement process
**Other Duties as** **Assigned (20%)**
+ Serves on Ainslie OSE leadership team
+ Liaison with University of Rochester graduate student committees
+ Serves as one of Simon’s representatives at industry conferences or events (ex. Graduate Business Student Services Alliance and NACADA) - to ensure Simon’s advising practices remain current.
+ Liaison to Simon Academic Integrity Committee, and Academic Standards Committee
+ Upholds and supports #SimonStrong values
**QUALIFICATIONS:**
+ Master's degree required.
+ Seven years of experience in academic advising or related student support services within a higher education setting required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Required experience working with underrepresented student populations.
+ Preferred direct experience working with international student populations and knowledge of International Student Office (ISO) process and key policies.
+ Demonstrated understanding of academic advising theory and best practices in student success initiatives.
+ Demonstrated team leadership and the ability to work effectively in cross functional teams;
+ Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to effectively engage with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds in both written and verbal communication;
+ Commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable advising environment;
+ Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to changing needs and priorities in a fast-paced environment;
+ Proficiency in advising technology, data management systems, and Microsoft Office Suite;
+ Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed to support program needs which may include travel/international travel.
