Short Description
Working in internal audit offers an opportunity to learn about the entire American Water (AW) business and to make connections with senior leaders throughout the company. AW Internal Audit (IA) is an independent function reporting directly to the Audit, Finance, and Risk Committee of the Board of Directors (Board). AW IA provides objective assurance and advisory services using a risk-based, collaborative approach to improve integrated risk management and to support the company’s strategy of operational, capital, and regulatory execution.

Primary RoleResponsible for working with the AW IA team and collaborating with business leadership to prepare and execute an integrated risk-based audit plan to assess, report on, and make suggestions for improving the company's key operational activities and internal controls.
This role will work closely with various stakeholders to improve risk management and share knowledge on operational matters such as environmental management systems, water quality, treatment, engineering, safety, and regulatory compliance.
Key Relationships/StakeholdersThe Audit, Finance, and Risk Committee of the Board, and teams across AW including but not limited to Corporate Leadership, State Leadership, Operational Excellence, Safety, Environmental, Engineering, State Operations, Human Resources, IT and Legal. AW IA also partners with External audit and audit vendors.
Responsibilities Support the Vice President of Internal Audit in providing objective assurance and advisory services using a risk-based, collaborative approach to improve integrated risk management and support AW’s strategy of operational, capital, and regulatory execution. Oversee the audit process and development of reports assessing AW’s systems of internal controls, risk management, and governance including evaluating adherence to company plans, policies, procedures, compliance with laws/regulations, all in support of achieving AW’s strategic objectives. Maintain conformance with IIA Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing. Build strong relationships across AW multiple teams, including AW stakeholders and external vendors. Direct the execution of Internal Audit program strategies including establishment and evaluation of activities, goals, and KPIs that contribute to short-term and long-term objectives. Shape the AW AI organizational culture and promote a positive work environment. Focus on talent management, including attracting and retaining top talent. Develop, train and mentor Internal Audit staff members. Internal staffing level 8-10 FTE; external staffing level 5-10 FTE (consultants). Act as deputy to VP Internal Audit, overseeing day-to-day activities of the audit team, and standing in for VP Internal Audit in certain meetings/events, as necessary. Support IA VP in function’s budget oversight and accountability. Knowledge/Skills Broad experience in several of these operational areas: water and wastewater treatment, water quality, environmental management systems/ procedures, environmental regulations, health and safety regulations, engineering, and operational matters. The ability to identify and leverage technical experts in different specialized fields as needed. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Effective interpersonal skills and leadership presence with an emphasis on initiative, professional judgement, critical thinking, courage, decision making, knowledge sharing, and team building. Strong project and change management skills (e.g. planning, organizing, directing, monitoring and reporting on audits/projects, and managing concurrent projects). Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Advanced degree preferred. Minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience managing utility or regulatory operations. Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience managing people. Demonstrated experience in leading, motivating and empowering teams to effect positive change. Certifications/LicensesOne or more of water, wastewater, engineering, environmental certification(s) and /or licensure preferred.
Work LocationThe ideal candidate will be based in our Camden, NJ office following a hybrid schedule working 3 days a week. We will consider a remote work schedule with a requirement to work remotely within a state where AW operates.
Travel RequirementsUp to 10% travel within the United States, usually scheduled with advance notice.
