Deputy General Counsel-Healthcare **Office of the General Counsel, Stanford, California, United States** Compliance Legal Post Date Oct 18, 2024 Requisition # 104961 Immediate opening for a full-time attorney in the Office of the General Counsel as the Deputy General Counsel - Healthcare. This position will lead a team of experienced healthcare attorneys who are primarily responsible for providing business, transactional, employment, and regulatory legal advice to Stanford Health Care, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley, Stanford Medicine Partners, and Packard Children’s Health Alliance. This position will also coordinate closely with other attorneys to provide legal advice to the Stanford School of Medicine. The Deputy General Counsel - Healthcare will report directly to the Vice President and General Counsel. This position, both personally and through leading a team of healthcare attorneys, provides legal advice on a wide variety of legal and regulatory issues that face academic medical centers. These issues include, but are not limited to, the following: + Supporting the hospital CEOs and Boards of Directors in implementing governance best practices; + Developing transactional structures to enable the hospitals and medical foundations to achieve their business goals while minimizing legal risk and complexity; + Advising on a wide variety of healthcare regulatory issues, including licensing and accreditation, healthcare reimbursement, pharmacy and 340B regulatory issues, privacy, medical staff, antitrust, clinical laboratories, managed care, conflict of interest, Stark and anti-kickback laws, EMTALA, Office of Health Care Affordability, tax exemption, Medicare/Medi-Cal enrollment, and graduate medical education; + Providing legal support to the Chief Compliance Officer and Chief Privacy Officer, including responding to governmental inquiries, directing attorney-client privileged internal investigations, and developing policies to ensure compliance with rapidly changing laws and regulations; + Partnering with outside counsel in numerous areas including information technology, architect and construction contracts, and negotiation and review of managed care contracts; + Collaborating with hospital risk management and overseeing litigation in areas such as reimbursement and false claims; + Overseeing development and management of hospital legal budgets. The position requires experience, discretion, flexibility, excellent judgment, collaboration, and the ability to understand and manage projects with competing interests in a constantly changing, cutting-edge environment. The successful candidate must be a strong relationship builder with significant experience advising executives on complex healthcare regulatory and transactional issues and must be skilled at mentoring attorneys and able to work collaboratively with other in-house attorneys and outside counsel. **Qualifications** Applicants should have a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience, preferably in both a law firm and an academic medical center setting, and must be a member of the California Bar or able to become one shortly. Requirements include excellence in academic credentials, writing, analytical and communication skills as well as excellent judgment and a practical, efficient approach to solving legal problems. Applicants must be responsive, committed to teamwork, comfortable with technology, and have a proven record of providing the highest quality client service. This position requires residence in the Bay Area, and the successful candidate must be in the office at least four days per week. ***The final candidate will need to successfully pass a background check to be considered for this position. Employees may also perform other duties as assigned. The expected pay range for this position is $350,000 - $500,000 per annum. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
