Data Journalist, Campaign Red


Haymarket Media, Inc. is seeking a Data Journalist to join the Campaign Red team. This position is located in our New York, NY or Toronto office, with two days on-site (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) and three days remote.

Campaign is the pre-eminent brand covering advertising, media and marketing globally. Campaign Red is the brand’s global insights, analysis and data content service for our premium subscribers. We help readers benchmark their performance, identity opportunities and understand market trends. 


At its heart is a database of global new-business wins, retentions and losses, billings, mergers and acquisitions, award wins and creative work in the advertising industry. It forms an integral part of our corporate license offering across the Campaign brand and supports our global network of editorial teams spanning 9 territories.


Campaign Red is looking for a journalist to join our North American team and to help make our data journalism authoritative and indispensable. This position will work hand-in-hand with highly skilled reporters across the globe to produce analysis and interpretation of industry data.


You will be expected to source and clean relevant data and spot any ‘big story’ hidden within the numbers. You will produce regular commentary and data interpretation in stories for Campaign’s global audience, with the main focus on North America. 


The data journalist is expected to work closely with the Campaign editorial team globally to advise on how Red data can be used to power the delivery of more premium content for the brand. They will provide key support in the project management, production and delivery of all Red-related content. Their responsibility therefore includes both the editorial management of the data itself, plus the production and delivery of reports, bulletins and surveys. 


Success within this role will require a combination of keen analysis of data and journalistic talent.


Reporting:


The data journalist will report to the Global Intelligence Editor, who is based in the UK. They will work closely with the Campaign editorial teams in the US and Canada, as well as the product development team. 


Roles & Responsibilities:


Manage the editorial output from Red including the identification, planning, creation and delivery of reports, bulletins and surveys as briefed into you by Campaign’s Global Intelligence Editor.

Using your close knowledge of the data, work with Campaign’s editors to spot potential data-driven premium subs tier content

To work with the wider Red team helping to ensure the data is fit for purpose

To manage regional freelance contributors to Red and take charge of their commissioning as directed by the Global Intelligence Editor.

Generate strong relationships with key advertising, media and marketing professionals in the North American market

Be the industry expert. Use your knowledge of the advertising industry to sense check data within Red

Ensure quality control of all data and editorial is consistent with Campaign standards

Create compelling, must-read stories, reports and data visualisations for our readers.



Skills & Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field

Proficient in Excel/Google Sheets – Knowledge of common formulas is key (vlookups/sumifs/countifs etc), as well as comfort using features such as ‘text to columns’, ‘conditional formatting’, ‘sorting’ and ‘filtering’.

Confidence working with data. This includes data in different formats (Google Docs/Google Sheets/Excel etc). This also includes manipulating data that is not in a desirable format (webpages/surveys etc) into a usable format.

Ability to identify trends from data to look for the ‘bigger story’. Comfort with working with large spreadsheets and being able to identify trends independently.

High-level communication and interpersonal skills. The data editor will need to communicate ideas and strategy on data-led offerings to stakeholders.

Ability to determine how data should be visualised to best illustrate trends – ie what infographics work best for specific data sets.

Ability to write to a high standard and express data trends effectively in writing.

Ability to cultivate strong industry relationships to build up market knowledge.

Ability to take on tasks independently and deliver them on time – sometimes under tight deadlines.

Experience as a journalist/data journalist/reporter/writer/researcher

Not Essential (but Highly Desirable):

Knowledge of the advertising industry.

Knowledge of Campaign and its offering.

Experience with data visualisation software or tools, such as Infogram or Datawrapper.

Experience with national or industry data sources.

Experience with programming languages.

Experience with AI.

The salary range for this position is $85,000–$95,000. Compensation will be commensurate with experience, skill level, functional and/or industry knowledge, education level, certifications, as well as other qualifications.
